]]>But apart from being influenced by 16th century masters, Knapp’s technique is also a reflection of her background in fashion. Having studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Parsons The New School for Design, majoring in Fashion Design, Knapp worked as a printed textile designer in the fashion industry for several years.
“I have consciously revisited this lost craft of fine cross-hatching,” she admitted once in an interview with Folio. “Unconsciously, however, my years as a textile designer have crept into my work. People often point out that my inked lines appear woven or stitched – I can’t deny the resemblance.”
In fact, it was during her practice as a textile designer that Knapp’s obsession with old engravings was ignited. “While on a trip to New York City for a textile trade show, MoMA had an exhibit on the evolution of printmaking,” she recalls. “I remember walking through it, viewing engravings that were blown up to an immense size. I was immersed in their imagery.” According to Knapp, this particular moment proved to be a game changer. “I had always loved old engravings, but this show ignited a different level of love for me,” she says.
Incredibly, Knapp’s drawings are completely hand drawn, which takes time and patience (each piece takes anywhere between ten to 300 hours to complete). Describing her art as introspective, patient, and methodical, her pieces tend to explore the relationship between desire, reason, and circumstance. Scroll down to see some recent work:

]]>As he explains, his simple line drawings are created while awake. However, they represent the copies of illustrations depicted in a lucid dream.
“So there are two versions of each drawing. One created by dreaming me with a dream pen and a dream piece of paper then another version which is a copy of that drawing,” he wrote on his website.
“When I’m drawing in the dream, I intentionally try to keep it simple, so I know I can replicate it, but sometimes the dream just throws out something incredibly complex, and I just have to give my best approximation.”
Unusual self-portraits or encountering a dream character to create a drawing for him are just some of the crazy things Green experiences. However, isn’t it such a creative way to create art?

]]>“I love the ephemeral nature of maps, the range of paper types, weights, textures—even the smell,” gushed Fairburn in an interview with My Modern Met. Fairburn adds that with maps, no two surfaces are ever the same.
“Sometimes that’s too bad because occasionally I’ll find a paper type I really like, only to never find it in any other map ever again,” he notes. But it also makes for a more exciting process.
According to Fairburn, instead of working against the map, he lets the material guide him, aiming to preserve the functionality of each map. “I love the way in which maps age and show their use over time,” he says.
“In that respect, old maps are a very forgiving medium, unlike a crisp white canvas. It’s somehow welcoming, like a pair of shoes that have been worn in. You can’t really go wrong with the marks you make—at least not at the very start of a drawing, which is often the most daunting part for any artist.”
But understanding his source material takes time and patience, and Fairburn explains that part of his process includes studying the maps for hours on end, understanding the terrain before he begins manipulating it to his liking.
“I’ll always start by studying the map against the figure, mentally sketching any possible outcomes,” he further explained. “Ultimately, my process is about harmonizing two structures in one physical space.”

]]>According to Woodger, his love of cartoons can be traced back to his childhood, when he enjoyed watching The Simpsons and daydreaming about making a living from doing what he loves—drawing and animating. “I’ve always loved drawing, but for a long time I just considered it a hobby and assumed you couldn’t make a living off it,” he admits, “so I focused my attention elsewhere.”
It wasn’t until he was coming to the end of his A-Levels that he found out his college offered an Art Foundation course. The option to study the foundation of art hasn’t occurred to him up until then. “A free extra year of education doing just art and design, or into full time employment at the Golf Club I was working at? Seemed like a no-brainer so I enrolled and I’ve never looked back,” he recalled.
His spontaneous enrollment seems to have paid off – big time. Now a freelance illustrator, animator, and icon designer, his clients are as big as Google, The New York Times, GQ, and The Washington Post. Recent works include an animation to The Handwash Song and an animated loop of the new Vauxhall Corsa-E.

]]>One particular illustration project that helped Kitagishi rise to prominence was her 366 Days series. For one whole year, Kitagishi made an illustration every day and shared it on Instagram. Sometimes the illustrations were based around a theme, but more often than not she simply drew whatever she felt like that day. It’s this series, which was later made into a book, that helped promote her work online.
“When I started the project, I had no idea it would end up as a book, so it’s been a lovely surprise!” she later relayed in an interview with Flow Magazine. Inspired mainly by children’s picture books, Kitagishi admits she’s drawn especially to their bright colors. “But I also find pleasure in my daily life,” she adds, “like eating delicious food, chatting with my friends and family, and coming across cute cats in my neighborhood.”
“I often draw characters like cats, owls, rabbits, girls with bobbed hair and men with mustaches,” she adds. Scroll down to see some of her delightful creations.
