Fashion illustration usually doesn’t get as much attention as other art forms, but it certainly deserves it. Eduardo Torres will make you fall in love with fashion illustration with his incredibly realistic drawings that certainly belong on the runway.

Torres is a Mexican illustrator and fashion designer, who managed to make a name for himself with his avant-garde illustrations. He hasn’t been sharing his art with the world for too long, but his Instagram posts are always worth waiting for and they’re constantly pushing the boundaries of fashion.

Torres usually uses colored pencils and blendable markers to render each garment he draws, fully capturing the details and dynamic movements that make them special.

Most of Torres’s illustrations stem from his imagination, but that’s not always the case. He also enjoys using his special talent to capture his favorite red carpet and runaway looks, drawing his own versions of outfits worn by Elsa Hosk, Gigi Hadid, and many more.

Torres’ illustrations are often inspired by couture designers he sees as his role models, from Iris van Herpen to Zuhair Murad. Considering how great his drawings is, we wouldn’t be surprised if he went on to work with one of his idols in the future.

If you’re a huge fan of fashion illustration, but feel like they often feel pretty similar, it’s time you discover Edgar Artis’ creations. He put a twist on this art form by using everyday objects to craft unusual fashion illustrations that have to be seen to be believed.

With almost 650,000 followers under his belt, the Paris-based Armenian artist is one of Instagram’s leading fashion illustrators. What makes his work so unique is his use of food, flowers, and other household items that he finds in his surroundings.

Artis makes these objects a part of his illustrations because he wants to show people that the little things we don’t even notice also have beauty. His main goal isn’t to simply create a beautiful drawing with found objects, but to use them to tell a story and offer inspiration.

Food, especially veggies, fruits, and pasta, are commonly used in his illustrations, but he doesn’t stop there. Non-edible objects are also heavily featured in his work, ranging from utensils and matches to feathers and flowers. The sky is the limit when it comes to his creativity, and we’re bringing you some of the amazing illustrations that made us fall in love with his work.

Los Angeles-based illustrator Bijou Karman has fashion running through her veins. Her understanding of color and textures is evident not only through her art, but simply by scrolling through her beautifully curated Instagram page, where she also shares photos of her fashionable attire and apartment.

“My personal style as an artist is really reliant upon bright colors and [the] mixing of different prints,” she relayed in an interview with Vanity Fair. “And a lot of clashing patterns that you don’t think would work together harmoniously.”

Such clashing combinations make for a playful effect that has caught the attention of brands as prominent as Apple and Google. Karman’s work also features frequently in fashion publications like ELLE and Harper’s Bazaar.

But her most high-profile collaboration has been with singer and fashion icon Rhianna. “I was intimidated to work with [her] at first because I am such a big fan,” admitted Karman, “but it was cool to take her suggestions and her style and bring my own style and sense of fashion to it,” she adds.

The collaboration included a series of illustrations of Rhianna, which reflected her edgy style. “This is the most high-profile job I’ve ever done,” said Karman, “and it showed people what I was capable of.”

Other than Rhianna, Karman’s work often features powerful women, exploring the relation between style and identity. Some of her more recent work includes illustrating the Delta Sigma Theta sisters (the first black sorority at Brown) as well as a sorority magazine cover that celebrates the inspiring women who have come out of KKG.

Ralph Lauren taught us that fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not even about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you. In that sense, fashion illustrator Annie Naranian has captured fashion’s very essence. Based in Toronto, she’s known for her playful, quirky, and oftentimes exaggerated illustrations.

According to Naranian, this “quirkiness” is very much intended and is meant to spark happiness in her audience. Through her work, she hopes others can experience a sense of joy in a world that often takes itself too seriously.

“Before I begin illustrating, my technical process begins with collecting images from Instagram, Pinterest, various fashion magazines, and Vogue.com,” she shared her creative process in an interview with I Love Illustration.

Her work, often digital, is created using an iPad (with software like Illustrator, Photoshop, Procreate). And when Naranian isn’t working digitally, you can find her testing out mediums like ink, pastel, acrylic, and watercolor.

The end result often portrays high fashion design by emphasizing the use of color in a way that captures the communicative nature of fashion (that extra something, something Lauren has referred to). Her stylistic versatility has also allowed her to work alongside reputable companies, with collaborations with brands as big as Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Reebok.

Naturally, Naranian’s inspiration comes from the fashion world, in all its versatility. “When I am not in the studio, you can find me getting lost in vintage clothing stores,” she shares. “My interest in vintage fashion can be seen reflected in my art, because I think much of contemporary fashion is indebted to what has come before it. And it is that very connection my art seeks to explore: the ways in which the methods of contemporary fashion are related to or are different from the techniques of the past.”

A long, long time ago, there was a time when man wore jeans and fashion, in all its colorful multitude, was king. Masks were reserved for small children or superhero enthusiasts, and social distancing wasn’t even a thing. Man, those were the days. Here to remind us of the joys of fashion is illustrator Ewelina Dymek. Based in Poznań, Poland, she’s known for her realistic illustrations that capture the very essence of fashion.

A self-taught illustrator, Dymek has taught herself everything she needed to know through much trial and error. Her technique relies on combining pencil drawing, collage work, and digital software—a combination that allows for creative freedom. It’s this unique flavor that attracted clients as big as Neutrogena, Condé Nast, The Washington Post, and Samsung.

“I like to create atmosphere by using contrast and juxtapose not only dark and light shading but also detailed pencil-drawn elements with abstract shapes,” relayed Dymek in an interview with Inky Goodness. “Using brush strokes in a certain way makes the composition dynamic and expressive – it all depends on how visually strong I want an illustration to be. Another technique that I use to create a certain mood is juxtaposing contrasting and saturated colors to make pencil drawing pop and create a visual tension.”

“A captivating fashion illustration not only depicts clothing (which is very important!) but also evokes certain feelings and creates atmosphere,” she explains. “A good fashion illustrator not only draws a piece of clothing but also interprets it in his their own way and is able to convey certain mood behind a designer’s collection.”

According to G. Bruce Boyer, real style is never right or wrong. It’s a matter of being yourself on purpose. Netherlands-based illustrator Tessa M. de Graaf understands this essence of style intuitively. Her illustrated subjects treat fashion as a means rather than an end—drawing attention to the ways in which attitude and confidence are the true forces behind fashion.

“Before I start drawing I collect pictures from fashion magazines/the internet (Pinterest/ Instagram),” she shared in an interview with I Love Illustration. “I don’t sketch with a pencil; I just create lots of silhouettes or faces with watercolor/ ink directly on paper.”

Her toolbox includes ink, watercolor, paint, crayons, and pencils, with the end result deliberately unpolished (because with real style—there’s never right or wrong).

According to de Graaf, her love of illustration sparked early on: “As a 3-year-old girl, I was drawing all day long and when I turned 16 years I attended various courses in figure drawing,” she shared.

Having grown up, she went on to study at the AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute) in Amsterdam and later got a Master’s degree in Fashion, Design, & Strategy at ArtEZ in Arnhem. “When I went to the academy, fashion drawing and figure drawing were my favorite subjects,” she says.

After working a short period of time as a freelance stylist, she decided to return to her original passion—illustrating. Combining both her passions, her work now spans around the fashion and beauty worlds, with clients like AvantGarde, Bijenkorf, Swarovski, Bordeaux, Femmesdusud, and Holland Herald magazine (KLM).

Fashion illustration is all about making an impression. It’s about creating a sense of excitement and intrigue that serves both fashion brands and fashion consumers. Mainly, it’s about having fun and being creative.

Simona Murialdo’s illustrations embody the creative spirit of fashion. Her work spanning both personal projects and commercial collaborations (with clients including publications like Oxford Press and Elle UK), Murialdo’s illustrations prove that fashion can take many shapes and forms.

Her work also provides a way of combining two of her greatest passions: fashion and art. According to Murialdo, while she grew up thinking she’d become a fashion designer, she admittedly enjoyed the drawing process better.

“I have been drawing since I can remember,” she shared with I Love Illustration. “I recall coming home from school and sketching long haired princesses with beautiful and improbably-voluminous over-wide-long dresses covered in flowers and ribbons.”

She went on to study Graphic Design in Milan and Fashion Illustration in London, where she lived and worked for many years. “I let my illustrative and artistic side take over and I drifted into Illustration and Graphic Design,” says Murialdo.

Currently back in Milan, she now teaches Graphic and Multimedia Design at Istituto Marangoni, while consulting as Fashion Illustrator and Art Director.

Her advice to other aspiring creatives? Seek your own approval, before seeking other’s approval. “Never draw to please others,” stresses Murialdo’s. “Only draw to please yourself.”

Roxy van Bemmel’s paintings and illustrations are both familiar and unfamiliar. With a focus on portrait art, her subjects are painted with exaggerated features and dramatic color stories.

“I paint photos, Instagram photos, myself, my mind,” writes van Bemmel on her website. “They’re kind of like relatable aliens.”

Having studied fashion design at ArtEZ Academy of the Arts in Arnhem, van Bemmel’s art explores two of her biggest interests and sources of inspiration: fashion and people (her tagline on Instagram? “Painting faces to remember what my friends look like”).

“I’m fascinated by people,” she explains on her website. “The way their eyes are just a little unhappy, how their mouth is saying something that hasn’t been said yet.”

But though inspired by people and what they wear, her artistic style is more expressionistic than realistic, providing in and of itself an artistic interpretation to fashion as an art movement. As such, her subjects become somewhat elusive, hard to pinpoint regarding gender, race, or age. “Often my subjects are female, sometimes they’re in between,” says van Bemmel.

But when it comes to her message, van Bemmel hopes to empower others. “I want the viewer to receive confidence,” she writes. “They can be a bit scared too, but they should go home confident. Like putting on your perfect outfit, I want my paintings to be like that.”

The fashion industry is made up of more than just designers, magazine editors, and photographers—it’s made up of illustrators too. Unlike photographers, who tend to be more or less committed to reality, a fashion illustrator has endless freedom when it comes to his or her vision and aesthetic.

Esra Roise is one of those creative individuals. Her illustrations—black and white, with a hint of color—seem to capture the spirit of fashion, while remaining fairly minimal. Based in Oslo, this minimalism suits the Nordic aesthetic in general.

“I often start doodling with no special direction and it just takes on a life of its own throughout the process,” Roise shared in an interview with Artflakes. Her intuitive approach seems to have worked, attracting clients as prominent as VOGUE, Stella McCartney, Burberry, Estée Lauder, and NIKE.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be graced with awesome clients that often let me play around with the given tasks, and just do my thing, which I very much enjoy,” she added. “But that being said, I try to accommodate the clients wish as much as I can without compromising my own aesthetic when working with a specific brief. With personal work, it is more of a spur of the moment-inspirations that can go in any which direction I chose.”

In fact, it can be the other way around, with fashion illustrators documenting, and more often than not, interpreting recent fashion trends through their art.

Such are Karolina Pawelczyk’s illustrations. Drawn loosely, and rather humorously, Pawelczyk’s work is a refreshing take on fashion. According to the Polish-based illustrator, she finds inspiration in the world around her, including stylish girls, good music, Pinterest, movies, and fashion itself.

With a growing fanbase online, Pawelczyk’s clients include Marc Jacobs Fragrances, Armani Beauty, Glamour GermanyELLE Polska. Recent work include an illustrated interpretations of Prada handbags and Marc Jacobs perfume bottles.

“I have been drawing and painting my whole life,” Pawelczyk shared with I Love Illustration. “After graduating I knew that I want to improve my drawing skills and I wanted to do it in the best possible place so I traveled to London and learned how to draw fashion at Central Saint Martins. The time I spent in London was amazing, super inspiring and it was the best thing I could do for myself.”

Fashion illustration started out as a way of visualizing designs before sewing actual clothing. But these days, fashion illustrations don’t actually need to result in clothes.

If you’re looking to get your fashion fix in a clever, original way, you might want to follow her Instagram page.
