Howard Lee is a talented British artist who specializes in hyperrealistic drawings and art illusions. Lee is so good at what he does that even the most eagled-eye viewer can be tricked into thinking his artwork is actually a real thing.

Lee, who previously earned internet fame on YouTube with hyperrealist drawing videos, recently presented a cool new project that saw him blend a tree with the skyline of Manhattan, New York City.

In a video posted on his social media, Lee can be seen wrapping a cloth around a tree on the Brooklyn side of the East River. Across the river is Manhattan’s Financial District, also known as FiDi.

The artist first covers the cloth with some yellow and black spray paint before starting to paint the part of the FiDi that the tree is covering. Little by little, the tree becomes “see-through,” revealing what’s on the other side of the river.

The end result is stunning, as the painting on the tree perfectly blends in with the Financial District skyline. It looks like someone cut down the tree in the middle to allow an undisturbed view. The only thing that gives away the illusion is the ferryboat that passes by at one point.

Check out Lee’s amazing art illusion below.

Iowa-based artist Shannon Mayhew creates beautiful hyperrealistic portraits that depict all sorts of domestic and wild animals. Her works are not only impressive due to the subjects and level of detail they contain but also due to the fact that Mayhew is a self-taught artist.

Despite not having any formal art education, Mayhew is able to perfectly capture all the features of bucks, horses, roosters, and other animals and draw them in a photograph-like quality. And she does it by using just pencils.

In a recent post on Bored Panda, Mayhew explained that she started to draw animals when she was a child. Getting support from her grandma, who was also an artist, Mayhew started honing her skills further and got more familiar with different drawing techniques.

“I checked out book after book from the library that taught you different drawing techniques,” she shared. “I taught myself how to draw, although I do credit my grandma for my artistic abilities.”

Mayhew puts in a lot of effort and time in order to make her works look so realistic. According to her, it takes her between 32 to 63 hours to complete a piece depending on the size and complexity. Check out more of her animal portraits below.

The works of Australian artist CJ Hendry give hyper-realism a new meaning. Each of her drawings are carefully filled with so many details that you would swear you are looking at a photograph. And even when told that that is, in fact, a product of sheer talent and colored pencils, you might not believe it.

Hendry’s works are even more impressive when you know that art wasn’t exactly her calling early on. Originally she pursued degrees in architecture and finance while working in Chanel store to finance her studies. In 2013, however, Hendry decided to take a break from work and studies and do what she wants. It turned out that the thing she wanted to do was drawing.

Fast forward eight years, and Hendry is now a successful artist who has several exhibitions under her belt, with her color pencil drawings being part of art collections worldwide. Her calling card are grand-scale artworks that depict everyday objects, fashion items, thick swabs of paint, flower petals, and a lot more in an extremely detailed and lively manner.

In order to achieve the impressive hyper-realistic effect, the artist usually has to spend more than 200 hours making a single piece. But the final result makes it all worth it, as you can see for yourself below.

Kit King’s paintings are absolutely breathtaking. In fact, at first glance, you might hardly realize they’re paintings at all. Highly photorealistic, her work often focuses on the human body, paying particular attention to the human face. But while King’s work is hyperrealistic, she often adds an element of surprise to her pieces: distorting them in one way or another, and often rendering them in such ways that make them look pixelized or digitally manipulated.

“Imagine a photo of a person, and it has gone through the shredder to be discarded,” she described her work in an interview with Interlocutor, explaining that “this is the visual foundation for the sliced works.” According to King, through her manipulated work she hopes to elicit a strong response. The message being, she explains: “if it upsets you so much to see me destroy this luxury item—an object—why does it not upset you to see a person being destroyed in life?”

Naturally, her dramatic portraits (sliced or not), haven’t gone unnoticed. With some 333k followers on Instagram alone, King has received recognition both online and offline, having won several awards for her hyperrealistic portrait paintings. Her paintings have also been the subject of solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums internationally, showcasing throughout Canada and the United States, as well as countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates. Her portraits are also found in both private and public collections worldwide including the MET’s publication collection.

According to King, her journey to becoming an artist doesn’t have a defined starting point. “I’ve been painting from before I could walk or talk,” she recalls. “While I was growing up you could see the art follow the lead of realism. My scratchy kid drawings started to become more refined the more I drew or painted. Hyperrealism was just the natural evolution of that refinement.”

Take a look at some of her incredible pieces in the gallery below, and follow her Instagram page for more.

Looking at the portraits made by Marissa Oosterlee, an award-winning artist from the Netherlands, you could easily assume she is a photographer. Her works are full of details, and the subjects, mostly women, look like they are captured in a specific moment in time with a camera.

However, the truth is that Oosterlee doesn’t use a camera at all. Instead, she creates all her portraits with brushes, pencils, and an airbrush.

Oosterlee took hyperrealism art to a whole new level. She is capable of recreating every little detail and imperfection onto canvas to an astonishing level that leaves the viewers in awe.

According to Oosterlee herself, the portraits she makes are “influenced by sea and nature,” and she is looking to “create awareness of all beauty around us” and show “how important it is to be good to our planet.”

For her works, Marissa Oosterlee has received multiple awards including the national Dutch painting competition. Check out more of them below.
