American artist Jim Denevan earned worldwide recognition thanks to his large-scale land art. But his recent project, “Self Similar”, might be his most impressive work to date.

As part of Public Art Abu Dhabi, Denevan created land artwork that consists of 448 sand pyramids positioned in a way that they form a massive mandala. The pyramids are positioned in 19 rings and cover around 0.4 square miles.

“As I draw and shape these forms, an invitation is made, it emerges. An ‘entering into’ takes place. A centering. Scale, presence, human, and otherwise. External is internal and internal is external. That which expires and that which is eternal, a simultaneity, within and without,” Denevan described his creative process behind the project.

According to the artist, “Self Similar” will eventually “fall apart” due to strong sandstorms. However, until they do, they are bound to amaze a lot of people.

The installation is located on Fahid Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the visitors can walk between the pyramids for an immersive experience. There are also a couple of observation platforms that allow observation of the mesmerizing mandala pattern.

This remarkable artwork is also illuminated by night, adding a dimension of light art.

Most artists turn to art and craft stores when needing materials for their projects. Hannah Bullen-Ryner, on the other hand, prefers to “shop” while enjoying a relaxing outdoor walk.

Bullen-Ryner is a self-described land artist who creates intriguing art pieces with the help of natural materials. Using her impressive observation skills and a keen eye for details, she arranges twigs, leaves, petals, and branches to look like colorful birds, mouses, or squirrels.

According to this talented mom of twin girls, she rarely does a pre-planned piece and usually lets the materials guide her through the process.

“I flow purely with found materials, creating ephemeral Mandalas or little bird visitors underneath my favorite Oak tree,” says Bullen-Ryner.

Bullen-Ryner’s cool works are unfortunately always temporary, but the artist herself prefers it that way.

“I take some photos and then walk or cycle away, leaving it all behind and feeling calmer, more connected, and truly lighter,” she adds.

Land artist Jon Foreman arranges stones into artistic formations on the beaches of Wales. He calls the work he does Sculpt the World. His home town of Pembrokeshire, Wales is located near numerous beaches where he can go to make his stone art in the sand.

“The simple act of placing stone upon stone in the sand is very therapeutic,” Foreman told My Modern Met. “I’m sure we all enjoy a walk on the beach but this process I find to be more immersive; being there in nature, losing myself in the work, having left behind all the stresses of day to day life.”

He typically needs around four hours to finish a piece. His process starts with an idea and continues with him looking for the stones, then arranging them to fit the idea he had in mind. Instead of planning the formation to detail, he likes to see where the stones will take him and leave the process open to develop creativity.
