If you’re a fan of all things spooky and enjoy fashion garments that have a scary element to them, Bill Crisafi’s creations will be your cup of tea. This multidisciplinary artist is fighting his inner demons by making some of the quirkiest masks that you’ll ever come across.

Crisafi is currently based in Chicago, but his body of work is heavily influenced by the dark history of his home state of Massachusetts. We’ve seen him explore everything from illustration to sculpture over the years, but he caught our eyes when he started making haute couture masks that reflect his love for the occult.

Crisafi usually explores the themes of magic and folklore through his work, but a touch of camp and humor is present in all of them. This way, his masks manage to look scary and funny at the same time, and their duality is one of their strongest suits.

Crisafi works closely with fashion designer Hogan McLaughlin, whose client list includes the likes of Lady Gaga and Billy Porter. They share the same vision and love for dark romance and fantastical tales, and Crisafi’s masks look their best when they’re used as companion pieces to McLaughlin’s dresses at fashion shows.

Masks are one of the most underrated fashion accessories on the market and Demsel Frau will make you see them in a whole new light. This multifaceted artist is crafting the most incredible face coverings that you’ll ever see, using all sorts of different objects to bring them to life.

Damsel Frau is a brand founded by Magnhild Kennedy, a self-taught Norwegian artist based in London. She made a name for herself by crafting the most show-stopping wearable art—usually masks—and she sees them as much more than mere objects.

“I work with masks as autonomous works of art as well as action-objects. For me the mask is a place where different elements come together as situation. The work is about this place-situation, more so than the mask as a theme or category of form. The mask is a place,” reads Demsel Frau’s official website.

Demsel Frau’s masks are usually sewn by hand and she utilizes the most incredible materials to create them. Kennedy uses both self-produced and found materials, some of which happen to be centuries old. She takes pride in not sketching her designs beforehand and figuring them out as she goes along, solving technical problems and improvising to make the best of the materials at hand.

Ever since the coronavirus began, DIY face coverings have gone viral. People around the world have come up with new, creative ways to upcycle old clothes into masks, and socks have become a popular choice. All you need is a spare sock, which is the perfect use for socks we can’t find the pair to, and a pair of scissors. But, artist Daniel Arsham’s version of a face covering combines fashion with practicality—he created a mask from a pair of Dior’s Oblique socks that feature the designer’s logo.

This isn’t the first time Arsham has worked with Dior, he collaborated with Dior’s menswear designer, Kim Jones, on a soft pink set in the spring/summer 2020 men’s collection. Arsham is best known for his series Future Relics which repurposes nostalgic common objects like cassette tapes, Polaroid cameras, and landline phones by casting them in plaster, volcanic ash, or resin.

For his DIY sock mask, he provides pictures on how to make them. Check out some of the designer’s work below.

Artist Bertjan Pot and his assistant Vladi Rapaport worked together experimenting with materials when they discovered a fun new way to create masks from the rope. They were trying to make rugs but were stuck finding a way to keep the rope flat when Rapaport suggested they try making masks instead.

“In the end it turned out to be the most powerful application for the material,” said Pot to Azure Magazine.

His masks resemble tribal masks and look like they have a deeper meaning, but Pot assures everyone that they’re simply a fun result of a fail attempt at making rugs. Either way, we enjoyed browsing his Instagram page where he shares his art and we believe you will, too. In the meantime, scroll down to see the masks.
