Damsel Frau is Crafting the Most Show-Stopping Masks You’ll Ever See

Masks are one of the most underrated fashion accessories on the market and Demsel Frau will make you see them in a whole new light. This multifaceted artist is crafting the most incredible face coverings that you’ll ever see, using all sorts of different objects to bring them to life.

Damsel Frau is a brand founded by Magnhild Kennedy, a self-taught Norwegian artist based in London. She made a name for herself by crafting the most show-stopping wearable art—usually masks—and she sees them as much more than mere objects.

“I work with masks as autonomous works of art as well as action-objects. For me the mask is a place where different elements come together as situation. The work is about this place-situation, more so than the mask as a theme or category of form. The mask is a place,” reads Demsel Frau’s official website.

Demsel Frau’s masks are usually sewn by hand and she utilizes the most incredible materials to create them. Kennedy uses both self-produced and found materials, some of which happen to be centuries old. She takes pride in not sketching her designs beforehand and figuring them out as she goes along, solving technical problems and improvising to make the best of the materials at hand.
