Joao Charrua is a Portuguese origami artist who has a unique approach to his craft. He wants to add a new dimension to paper art by producing pieces that are unlike anything his audience has seen before.

While most paper artists prefer to take their inspiration from the animal world or pop culture, Charrua turns to the surreal. His paper sculptures are imaginative, daring, and thought-provoking. And most impressive of all, they are crafted from a single piece of paper.

Charrua’s creative process exemplifies his strive for unique, different, and unseen. The artist does extensive preparation to translate things from his imagination to paper via 3D sketches. These test paper sculptures allow him to visualize the features he wants to achieve and give his folding practice a more natural flow when he starts with the final piece.

“My paper sculptures are a journey through the places of my imagination,” the artist shares. “They are a physical translation of the ideas that inhabit my mind and come from the most different universes with the most diverse influences.”

Charrua frequently shares his new paper sculptures on Instagram, where he has almost 22K followers. Continue scrolling to check out more of his exceptional works.

Finnish paper artist Juho Könkkölä is taking origami to a whole new level with his impressive warrior figurines. His pieces are not only detailed and intricate but are also made by using just a single sheet of paper.

In order to make his samurais, archers, and all kind of different warriors, Könkkölä uses a combination of dry and wet origami techniques while avoiding ripping or cutting the paper. Some of the pieces can take up to 50 hours to create, while the whole process from planning and designing to execution can take months.

“There are several hundreds of steps to fold it from the square and there are probably thousands of individual folds,” the artist describes his creative process.

Maybe the most impressive thing about Könkkölä and his origami is that he never had a formal education. He is self-taught and has been perfecting his skills through books and video tutorials for the past 15 years.

However, once he reached his goal, he made another ambitious decision and continued his project until he reached 365 cranes in 365 days. But he didn’t stop there, he set up another goal to himself: he was going to attempt to fold and decorate one origami crane, every single day, until he would reach 1000 cranes in 1000 days, which, according to the Japanese tradition will grant the folder a wish.

His tiny and colorful masterpieces are mostly inspired by the Greek mythology, the Japanese folklore, nature and his own personal experiences.
