]]>Since the early 20th century, The Girl with a Pearl Earring has been displayed in The Hague’s Mauritshuis Museum, with hundreds of thousands of visitors coming every year to admire it. It’s so famous that even the simple shape is instantly recognizable. The painting is currently set to make a short trip to Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum in February for an expansive exhibit of Vermeer’s works. However, that doesn’t mean that its place on display will remain vacant.
Preparing for the painting’s absence, Mauritshuis launched My Girl with a Pearl project that invited people to share their own interpretation of Vermeer’s work. The best works will then take turns standing in for The Girl with a Pearl Earring until the painting returns.
“The rules? Well, there aren’t many, in fact. Feel free to surprise us,” shared the museum in an open call.
While deciding which works to show in its display room, Mauritshuis also decided to share the most creative ones on social media. The submissions are quite diverse, ranging from costume play on the theme of the painting to drawings in different styles. Check out some of our favorites below.

Merci’s work is against showing those that “should” be shown, so she picks subjects that are often marginalized. “When you visit the most important art museums you see wealthy, powerful, heterosexual cis white as the most important people in art history,” the artist tells It’s Nice That. “I capture people from the queer community, I spotlight those who have been forced into the shadows for so long, and I want to document their existence, rather than ignorance.”

Take a look a the painting above. Titled “Conversations in a Cafe”, it tells a story that only a masterfully painted canvas could do. From the gloomy dark bluish hue to the streak of sunlight emanating throughout the scene, we can practically smell the coffee and scones. We can hear the adjacent conversations, the non-chalantness of it all, and perhaps even a bout of spontaneous laughter.

She was born in Portland, Oregon, and specializes in oil paintings. Her two children and two pugs make every day of her life brighter, but most of her inspiration comes from a solitary life and those moments when we’re completely alone.
The artist used to have a clerical job that got boring fast, so she took a risk and invested everything in a career in art. Luckily, it paid out and she now has much more time to paint than she did before. This made her style evolve over time.
