Collage art that uses material from old magazines, encyclopedias, and illustration books is always interesting to see. Especially when it’s unusual as the one Argentinean collage artist MUMI creates.

MUMI uses cutouts from vintage prints to create strange and often surreal portraits. The way she combines illustrations of flowers, organs, animals, objects, and faces is quite fascinating, and you can hardly take your eyes off her pieces.

The longer you look, the artwork becomes more intriguing and bizarre. You discover subtle details and peculiar ways that different layers interact with each other.

According to MUMI, she enjoys the fact that making collages is an “organic process” that allows her to express her creativity in the best way possible.

“There are endless possibilities when I cut an image,” she explained in a recent interview. “I take it out of its context, its direct meaning, or its origin, and I give it a new surreal environment.”

MUMI shares her artworks on Instagram, where she has close to 50K followers. The artist also runs a webshop on which she sells the prints of her creations. You can check out more of them on her social media or by scrolling down and discovering our favorites.

For artist Shane Wheatcroft, finding the material for his artworks is just as fun and eventful as creating them. Wheatcroft spends a lot of his time browsing antique shops, eBay, and flea markets in an effort to find vintage photos, books, and magazines. He then uses them to create whimsical collages that have been his main creative outlet for the past five years.

Wheatcroft’s collages are usually centered on a single person that has their face covered with all sorts of seemingly random images. This way, you get a feeling that you are seeing through the person in the photo and into their thoughts, dreams and fears. This element of Wheatcroft’s works is actually what makes them so unique.

When it comes to his creative process, Wheatcroft prefers to take it as it comes. He chooses one particular photo and then works on it by adding photos and cutouts of different sizes. He lets the layout dictate his next move, allowing for unexpected outcomes.

“Often, the initial image won’t feature in the final piece, but it’s been invaluable as a starting point,” Wheatcroft explains on his official website.

Katy, better known as Collage Garden on Instagram, is a gifted London-based artist, who creates artworks by putting together different pieces to create a new masterpiece. Being inspired by surrealist artists like Man Ray, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, and Marcel Marien, Katy classifies her work as oneiric, exaggerated, and paradoxical.

“Many of my collages feature people traveling to or existing in dream-like spaces. I enjoy experimenting with scale and context, injecting trippy elements into seemingly normal scenarios and manipulating objects of familiarity into bizarre versions of themselves,” she revealed in an interview for Ballpit.

Despite finishing Fine Art at Nottingham University and majoring in surreal sculptures, the artist decided to choose a more approachable medium. All her materials are purchased while exploring for a book on space, nature, dreams, gardening, and buildings in second-hand shops.

Besides seeing her art as a way of therapy and liking the idea of people enjoying it, Katy has bonded with other talented artists as well, which keeps her going.

According to Benjamin Franklin, wealth is not his that has it, but his that enjoys it. Collage artist Mark Wagner might have taken this saying too literally, putting his money where his mouth is. His paper collages are made entirely from deconstructed U.S. dollar bills, which he cuts and pieces together, forming intricate pieces that highlight the intrinsic relationship between wealth and American identity.

According to Wagner, the cutting-and-gluing technique that forms the basis of his practice is one of the simpler creative impulses that exists: “Simpler than the impulse to generate a fully new thing is the impulse to alter what exists,” he writes on his website. “The world can be different, and I will make it so like this and like this.”

This creative impulse—to deconstruct and reconstruct—was what attracted him early on to collage art. Wagner’s practice didn’t begin with money, but evolved organically as he experimented with different materials. After first experimenting with cigarette packets, he decided to look for other familiar imagery.

“I hit on the dollar bill,” Wagner shared in an interview with Topic. “It’s the most common piece of paper, literally, in the world. When I started using it, I was just using it because it was common. And then I realized that I could bend the subject matter of the work to address what it held for people.”

The work itself involves a lot of altering, and Wagner estimates he destroys thousands of bills yearly. But though working with money comes at a price (literally), it isn’t as expensive as other art materials. Wagner estimates that a 30×40-inch piece costs less than $100.

“People always think that it’s expensive, but it’s not in the long run,” he remarked. “I use up most of the bill. A piece might look like it has a whole lot of dollars gone into it, because it has 300 heads on it, or 1,000 heads on it, but that’s just that one little piece of paper from the middle, and the rest of those bills are being used in other works.”

The finished result is worth every penny.

Hollie Chastain is a Chattanooga-based “paperphile artist and illustrator” who has a goal of giving old books and photographs a new life by turning them into cool collages.

According to this talented Tennessean, she was always intrigued by paper and would often collect it in various forms. Using it to make art was a natural step forward for her.

Chastain says that all her works have a story-telling quality, as she aims to create both visually pleasing artwork, but also one that will encourage the viewer to dive deeper into its message.

“What I adore about collage as a medium is the complete versatility and the allowances that it gives first time creators to play around with color and texture and composition without any “but I can’t draw” and “I’m not an artist” hang-ups,” Chastain explained in a recent interview with Colossal.

Check out some of her works below.
