Artist Looks for Amazing Manhole Covers Around Europe and Turns Them Into Shirts

True artists see beauty in everything around them, no matter how mundane and insignificant it may seem. At least that happens to be the case with Emma-France Raff, who is traveling around Europe looking for amazing manhole covers and using them to create unique fashion pieces.

Raff came up with this idea while discussing manhole covers with her father, the artist Johannes Kohlrusc. She’s always been impressed by their variety, craft, materiality, the local diversity and wondered if she could use them as inspiration in her work.

She decided to test this theory by rolling paint over one manhole cover in Porto, and carefully pressing a piece of cloth on. Her brand Raub Druckerin was born right then and there after she released the endless potential of using manhole covers to create unique pieces of clothing.

She spent most of her time in Berlin and created an impressive collection of shirts inspired by the German capital. Her creative voyage later took her everywhere from Istanbul and Thessaloniki to Naples and Paris, and her collection of manhole-inspired shirts expanded with each trip she embarked on.

Raff turned European metropolis into open-air printing workshops, and she’s showing no signs of stopping. Some of her creations are completely unique, while others led to reproductions that can be purchased on Raub Druckerin’s official website.
