Tobey King Became an Internet Sensation Thanks to Her Crochet Dolls

Crocheting became everyone’s favorite hobby back in 2020, and it seems like it’s not going anywhere. Some crochet artists even managed to become so good that they found viral fame, and Tobey King from Texas is the best possible example.

King attracted over 50,000 followers to her Instagram page, and she’s best known for creating crochet dolls inspired by beloved public figures. Most recently, she raised $40,000 for charity in exchange for one of her masterpieces, but this is just the latest chapter of her incredible journey.

On her official website, King explains she fell in love with crocheting in 2012 after quitting her job. She used YouTube videos to teach herself the basics before discovering the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures, known as amigurumi.

“I started with hats, blankets, scarves, and a few baby things. Then, I decided I wanted to make a doll that looked like me for my daughter and that is when I found amigurumi and I began making dolls and toys,” explains King.

Every once in a while, she accepts custom orders, but her dolls are mostly inspired by public figures, including Selena Quintanilla, and characters from Friends and The Golden Girls. King also shared some of her most popular patterns in her Etsy store, for everyone who wants to crochet tiny dolls just like hers.
