Ulla-Stina Wikander Gives Abandoned Objects New Life

Ulla-Stina Wikander is a Swedish artist with an unusual taste for bringing old textiles back to life. She collects old cross-stitched textiles and uses them to wrap vintage household items that were once discarded. So far, she has worked with phones, sewing machines, mixers, cameras, and many other mid-century items.

Wikander lives and works in Stockholm. She’s been an artist since the 1980s and collecting cross-stitch embroidery has been her hobby for the past 10 years. “Today I have a big collection with over 100 different designs,” we read on her website. “These embroideries have been made by women and is often seen as kitch and regarded pretty worthless. I have mixed feelings for them but sometimes they are very beautiful and I want to bring them back to life.”

But collecting them wasn’t enough for her; she wanted the whole world to be able to see them. Wikander started covering old household items with these embroideries in 2012 and never looked back. You can see her work below and more on her Instagram.
