There’s nothing like a good cake. Even the most basic chocolate cake can make any day great – there’s a reason we use them to celebrate birthdays!
But can cake be art? Yolanda Gampp sure thinks so.
Yolanda is a self-taught baker and cake decorator. She started as a little girl in her mom’s kitchen and soon developed incredible skills in cake baking and decorating. There are some very talented cake decorator out there that can take any old cake and give it a whole makeover with some icing… but it still looks like a cake. A beautiful cake, but still just a cake.
Yolanda, on the other hand, doesn’t want her cakes to look like cakes. Her skill lies in designing cakes that look like everyday objects. She’s made cakes that look like perfume bottles, popcorn, Christmas dinner, a purse, a poke ball, and so much more. You name it – she can make a cake that looks like it.
She decided to turn her weird, creative hobby into a career; she and a couple of her friends opened a YouTube channel which they call How to Cake It, and they film Yolanda’s cake decorating process. Their insane designs and Yolanda’s cheerful personality made the channel a hit.
Yolanda still uploads her cake decorating videos weekly and she is also the author of How To Cake It and she has her has own line of baking products. Her weird little hobby is now a passion for hundreds of thousands of people.
