Dr. Martens Releases Boots Inspired by Hokusai’s “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa”

Dr. Martens is best known for its classic black boots with yellow stitching. However, the footwear maker likes to break away from its traditional ways from time to time and deliver its fans some unique products. And it is always something special.

Most recently, Dr. Martens decided to team up with New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and make several products inspired by Hokusai’s iconic print “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” The collaboration turned out just as epic as you would expect.

There are two “Great Wave” products currently available for purchase at the MET’s website: classic Dr. Martens boots ($180) and a leather backpack ($210). The shoppers can also get Dr. Martens leather shoes ($140) with motifs of Hokusai’s work “Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō.”

Katsushika Hokusai lived and worked in Japan during the Edo period in the late 18th and early 19th century. He gained prominence for his ukiyo-e art, which is a type of art that focuses on woodblock prints. His most famous work is a series of landscape prints titled Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa. It is estimated that around 100 Great Wave prints have survived out of the original 8,000.
