Dutch Painter Transformed Celebrities Into Religious Icons

Mathijs Vissers is an illustrator and graphic designer based in the Netherlands. Although he works with both traditional and digital media, “he traded the mouse for a paintbrush and immersed himself in painting”. In his latest project, the artist created a series of abstract portraits and the Apostles series, where he turned celebrities into religious icons.

“This series of paintings titled Apostles combines history with contemporary portraits,” the artist shared on Bored Panda. “Religious works from art history are used as a starting point to inform the rest of the painting. Through color, shape and subject they are brought into current day. It shows a reflection of some of the driving force behind society, and how that relates to our past.”

To create his portraits, Vissers uses bold colors, a high level of detail and strong narratives.
