Lee Sangsoo Bends Steel Bars to Create Minimalist Animal Sculptures

When done properly, minimalist art can be impressive and effective despite its lack of details and imposing impact on the space. The works of South Korean sculptor Lee Sangsoo are a great example of that.

Sangsoo is known for his unique creative approach that sees him bending stainless steel bars to create minimalist animal sculptures. His minimalist approach has roots in the works of legendary painter Pablo Picasso, who had a habit of drawing animals in his paintings with just several intertwining lines.

After seeing the example of minimalist animals in one of Picasso’s works, Sangsoo came up with the idea to recreate the technique in 3D space rather than on paper. This is one of the reasons why he likes to refer to his works as “drawings in the air.”

Animals remain the main inspiration for Sangsoo, who appreciates the fact that each one has “its unique characteristics.”

“It is a mystery of nature and a result of evolution,” he shared in a chat with Museum Week Magazine. “No matter how talented an artist, he cannot express the wonder of nature. I just want to work on it anew as my method of expression.”

Sangsoo’s intriguing pieces have caught the art world by storm recently, and he is receiving offers to exhibit his sculptures left and right. As of now, he plans to stage a solo exhibition in Singapore later this year while also looking into possibilities of bringing his art to Europe and the United States.
