You know how they say that good deeds pay off? Well, it is not always, or at least not in the way you would expect. One man from Frankfurt, Germany, recently learned this when he returned a $4.8 million check to gummies maker Haribo, but only got several bags of gummies as a reward.

The man, named Anouar, was returning home from a visit to his mother when he spotted a piece of paper on the ground. He picked it up and was shocked by its content. The check was for more than €4.6 million ($4.8 million) and was made out to Haribo.

Anouar didn’t think twice and immediately contacted the company to tell them about it. After some time, Haribo’s legal team contacted him and told him to burn the check and send them a video as proof. Anour did just that and his good deed didn’t go unnoticed. But probably not in the way he would have hoped.

After several days, Anour received a gift package from Haribo that contained just six bags of gummies. It’s safe to say that the man wasn’t impressed, telling German media outlet Bild that Haribo was “cheap”. The company, on the other hand, said that this is their standard thank you package.

Social media users had some strong opinions on the matter, with some believing that Haribo should have found a more generous way to say thank you. However, others argued that no one could have cashed in the check other than the company either way, so it wasn’t much of a big deal.
