Matt Stevens Designs Retro Book Covers Inspired by His Favorite Movies

Books and movies are both amazing in their own right, but something great can happen when they come together. Matt Stevens decided to explore the connection between these two mediums through a series of illustrations that reimagine “good movies as old books”.

Stevens is a designer and illustrator based in North Carolina, who mostly specializes in branding and illustration. He’s now best known for his series of illustrations “Good Movies as Old Books”, which sees him designing vintage book covers inspired by his favorite movies.

Stevens embarked on this journey to overcome a creative funk and find a way to experiment with new mediums and techniques. Since starting this project in 2020, he attracted thousands of followers to his Instagram page and met a community of fellow movie lovers, who share a passion for the same films.

Inspiration for his “book covers” comes from the most unusual places and he lets the ideas flow before the loose sketches come together.

“Sometimes I see a vintage book and a style that I’d love to try and try and find a film on my running list that seems like a fit. I also like to stay flexible in the process. Many of the designs are very different in the finished version than how I envisioned them,” Stevens told Bored Panda.
