Philip Kupferschmidt’s Quirky Ceramic Vessels Look Like Happy Accidents

Amazing things can happen when ceramic artists decide to break the mold and push the boundaries of this art form. Philip Kupferschmidt is doing just that with his quirky vessels with drippy exteriors and all of his creations truly look like happy accidents.

Kupferschmidt is a ceramic artist based in California, who became a true sensation thanks to his signature drippy ceramic pieces. Before developing his own unique personal style, he received MFA in ceramics and BFA in creative photography from California State University in Fullerton.

“All of his work is formed by hand on the wheel, and while following a general series of themes, no two pieces are identical – nor surface exactly alike. He is interested in exploring unique approaches decorative and functional ceramics through design, color and glaze experimentation,” he explains on his official website.

What does this uniqueness mean in Kupferschmidt’s case? He specializes in transforming clay into weirdly-shaped vessels, which look like they’re covered with tiny drops or suspended in a liquid state. He uses a unique glazing process to make them come to life, singlehandedly covering their surface with drops and globs, thus making sure no two vessels are alike.
