Russian Artist Julia Petrova Creates Wonderful Surreal Images

Moscow-based artist and illustrator Julia Petrova creates mesmerizing artwork that has a utopian-dystopian vibe. Her work looks vintage and reminds us of old sci-fi movies and album covers for bands like Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath.

“While it’s tempting, I don’t think I’m present in my illustrations as any of the characters,” says Petrova, as quoted by Creative Boom. “In these worlds they navigate, I’m more of an invisible entity always standing next to them and giving them a sense of understanding even in the most unexpected situations. By characters, I don’t only mean human, or even animate, ones.”

She mostly uses watercolor, ink, and liner pens to create art. Many scenes are surreal and feel like a dream where you’re not exactly sure what’s going on, but you can’t look away. Petrova has a talent for presenting old ideas in a new way. Her art is available for purchase on her website as original paintings or prints.
