When making her ceramic vessels, Italian ceramist and illustrator Clara Holt leans on the tradition of pottery in her native country as well as ancient ways of decorating and clay shaping. As a result, her works turn into these impressive mythology-inspired vessels that look great and practical.

According to Holt, she always liked myths and folklore stories and used to read them a lot when she was young. She later started researching mythology further and ended up combining it with her passion for pottery.

“I have always had a passion for classical literature, Greek epics, and the surrealist current, which guides my research and personal interpretation of my subjects,” Holt shares on her website. “Each piece is a one-off, illustrated with a drawing inspired by places, mythology, or childhood stories.”

While Holt combines several techniques, her favorite one is sgraffito. Popularized in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, sgraffito includes covering an unfired ceramic body with glaze or color and then scraping it off in order to create contrasting images, patterns, or lettering. Besides making pots, vases, and other vessels, Holt applies her unique style to handmade ceramic tiles.

Holt frequently shares her newest creations on social media. Continue scrolling to check out more of them.

The color blue served as a source of inspiration for artists for centuries since it has the power to bring serenity and peace to everything around us. Leyla Mo couldn’t escape its charm and she’s now known under the alter ego Blue Bug since most of her ceramic art is decorated with different shades of blue.

Leyla Monteferrante aka Leyla Mo originally hails from Iran, but she’s been based in The Hague, Netherlands for over a decade. She describes herself as a “late-night ceramic artist” because she’s actually a health economist with a background in industrial engineering and has no technical artistic training.

Even though her academic career took her in a different direction, Leyla Mo has always been passionate about art. She tried many different ways to get creative while working as an engineer, and something finally clicked when she discovered ceramics.

“I started to try ceramics in 2019, and day after day I became more passionate about it. While I spend most of my time being a mom and a scientist, I cherish the moments I get – mostly in the evenings – to create ceramic pieces,” she explained on her official website.

The color blue is the most common motif in her work, which is generally inspired by Dutch and Italian traditional pottery, Middle Eastern patterns, nature, and animals.

Ceramic artists inspired by flowers are not a rarity in the pottery world, but there’s something that sets Laima Laurina apart. The Latvian artist made quite a splash with her flower petal collection, and you’ll have to take a closer look to realize how much attention to detail she put into each and every piece.

Laurina is a ceramics artist who hails from Riga, Latvia, and she’s been interested in ceramics for several years before deciding to pursue a degree in this subject at the Art Academy of Latvia. She later decided to branch out and expand her horizons by attending an exchange program in Mallorca, Spain.

Laurina enjoys experimenting with different shapes and patterns, and her artistic journey involved a lot of trial and error before she finally found her voice. She’s now best known for creating incredibly intricate ceramic vessels with an ombre effect, that look like they’ve been covered with countless colorful flower petals.

“All pieces are wheel-thrown from white porcelain and covered in tiny flower petals made from pigmented porcelain. One of the most time-consuming projects I’ve worked on because each petal is put on one at a time making the finished product completely unique,” Laurina explains on her Etsy page.

Australia’s natural beauty knows no bounds, and one talented ceramic artist found a unique way to celebrate its biodiversity. Her name is Araceli Adams, and she’ll rock your world with her ceramic creations inspired by Australia’s aquatic life and nature.

The founder of Casa Adams is currently based in Sydney, but she actually hails from Spain and life took her everywhere from Canada to the UK before she settled in Australia. Her body of work is largely inspired by this country and its endless natural beauty.

“The studio’s designs are inspired by Australia’s rich biodiversity, with the aim to recreate the wonder and curiosity felt by naturalists during the Age of Discovery. As the climate changes and more natural habitat is lost, Araceli hopes her works elicit the same wonder and joy,” she explains on her official website.

Adams has quite a unique approach to pottery and draws inspiration from hand-colored 18th-century natural history engravings. Her illustrations are mono-printed on porcelain before being fired in the kiln and then painted with watercolor-like underglaze before the second firing.

Adams’ studio is dedicated to planting a native tree in one of Carbon Positive Australia’s biodiversity restoration projects for each peace they sell online. She also strives to make her business as sustainable as possible and uses recyclable packaging and marketing materials.

Julia Pilipchatina spent years working as an illustrator before she decided to take a wild leap of faith and give pottery a shot. She quickly fell in love with ceramics and started celebrating the beauty and fragility of the natural world through her delicate porcelain creations.

Pilipchatina hails from Kharkiv, Ukraine, but she was forced to flee her country and move to Belgium after the war broke out. She found a great creative outlet in pottery and started an Instagram page @tiletiletesto, where she’s followed by over 30,000 people.

Most pottery artists can’t imagine working without a wheel, but not Pilipchatina. She developed her own technique which includes hand-painting each piece before firing them up at extreme heat.

“The cycle consists of heating and cooling to room temperature, which means that one firing can last 12 hours. Since the paint is semi-transparent, achieving brightness, depth, and contrast requires many layers, and therefore many firings,” Pilipchatina told Colossal.

She enjoys exploring all sorts of themes through her work, but the beauty of the natural world and our place in it is her favorite subject. Birds and flowers are very common motifs in her work, along with insects, and she used her art to overcome her fear of these curious creators.

If you love plants and animals in equal measure, Dóttir Studio will rock your world with their quirky vases. It was founded by the English artist and ceramic maker Jess King, best known for crafting truly adorable and purrfect vases and other décor pieces inspired by cats.

After graduating from the University of Brighton where she got her degree in illustration, King spent many years working on commercial surface pattern design. She decided to branch out and pave her own creative path after giving birth to her daughter, so it’s only fitting for her studio to be named “Dóttir”, which is the Icelandic word for daughter.

On her official website, King explains that she takes inspiration from nature and storytelling to create “whimsical ceramic curiosities that are embodied with a playful sense of narrative, reminiscent of a childhood memory or a story once told.” All her creations are built by hand and carefully illustrated, bringing characters from her imagination to life.

Those characters often happen to be cats and other feline creatures, but King is no stranger to experimenting with other themes. Ceramic vases and planters are two of her signature products, but you can find everything from coasters and bottle stoppers to candle holders and jewelry in her online store.

Most ceramics artists use their skills to create mugs, plates, and vases, but AJ Simpson decided to go in a completely different direction. They became a true sensation thanks to their quirky wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic characters.

Simpson, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, describes themselves as a “total ceramics nerd” and their educational background reflects that. They graduated from Grays School of Art in 2021 with a BA honor in 3D Design, specializing in ceramics.

Simpson’s audience significantly grew after they took part in The Great Pottery Throwdown, to be crowned as the winner last year. They now work as a full-time ceramic artist from the Deemouth Artist Studios community in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Our favorite thing about Simpson is their uncompromising style, and their ceramic creations inhabit a world of their own and look just like characters from a children’s book or a cartoon.

“AJ enjoys exploring the novel side of ceramics through their fun ‘blob’ series of decorative one-off characters. These creatures are inspired by AJ’s love for illustration and collecting rocks as a child,” the artist explains on their official website.

Simpson tries to make their creations fun and practical at the same time, and their art often takes shape of functional objects, such as mugs, bowls, plant pots, and more.

Austrian visual artist Robert Stadler recently presented an intriguing new series of ceramic objects that explore the human approach to fruit and veggies. Titled OMG-GMO, the series represents a “witty comment on the relationship between humans and their environment, as seen through the genetic manipulation of fruit and vegetables.”

On their own, Stadler’s pieces simply look like recreations of cucumbers, lemons, and watermelons in ceramics. However, they are also capable of serving a practical purpose. For example, a slice of rectangular seedless watermelon can be transformed into a stool, while eggplants serve as legs for a glass coffee table.

“Patiently “designed” over thousands of years, farming products such as tomatoes, bananas, aubergines, and many more have little resemblance to their wild, undomesticated relatives,” Stadler explains.

OMG-GMO series was commissioned by Carwan Gallery and crafted in collaboration with Italian ceramics maker BITOSSI Ceramiche. The pieces will debut at the upcoming Milan Design Week Fuorisalone even, before making their way to Carwan’s flagship gallery in Athens, Greece.

In case you don’t have a chance to check out the thought-provoking OMG-GMO ceramics objects in person, the artist and the gallery shared a handful of photos on social media. Check them out below.
