Every artist has the luxury of creating what they’re passionate about. This benefits all parties involved, because the stronger the passion, the better the work usually turns out to be. In the case of Ali Kay, we’d be willing to bet good money that she has a deep love for animals. Many of her amazing paintings feature all kinds of animals such as dogs, cats, horses, and many more.

But when it comes to the art of Kay, it’s not just about what she paints, but also how she does it. Her work really seems to have an underlying message to it, almost as if she’s trying to convey a deep opinion of how she feels about animals. If you’d ask our humble opinion, the vivid and bold nature in which she paints her animal subjects is her way of saying just how strong these creatures are—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Indeed, animals possess a bright and powerful energy, and this is displayed pretty confidently in Kay’s work.

But animals aren’t the only thing she paints. Kay recreates anything from a tree branch to a youthful boy laughing, and each of these works are just as impressive. It’s not hard to see how she was able to amass a solid 29,600 plus Instagram followers. If you’re interested in becoming one too, all it takes is the click of a button! Plus, she offers online lessons if that interests you.

“In order to see birds,” writes Robert Wilson Lynd, “it is necessary to become a part of the silence.” And if that’s the case, then Australian contemporary artist, Victoria Velozo, has found a way to blend in with silence.

Her paintings, most commonly featuring birds, pay homage to the avian creatures. The end result—bold, vibrant, and powerful—is anything but silent, calling attention to the importance these tiny winged animals have in the grand scheme of things.

Each of Velozo’s paintings features different types of birds, that provide the focal point of the piece. “Other than the realistic feature, I try not to have too much of a developed, preconceived idea of what I want the painting to look like when I begin,” relayed the artist in an interview with Artsy Shark.

Indeed, while the birds themselves are highly realistic and very much animated, the rest of the painting is fairly abstract, providing an emotional context to the final piece. Velozo explains that she, in fact, begins with these abstract backgrounds, building the piece from there.

“When beginning a new work, I create the backgrounds first,” she stressed. “They represent an abstract version of an environmental landscape in which the featured animal will be placed.” Using water and sponges, as well as collage techniques that include layering, Velozo’s intention is that the background will add movement and depth to the painting, highlighting its chosen subjects.

Take a look at some of her eye-popping pieces and be sure to follow her on Instagram for more.

Artist Camilla Engström grew up between Sweden and China, but now she lives in Los Angeles where she creates her bright, colorful artwork. She’s drawn to paint bodies that aren’t considered traditionally beautiful, but in a way, she shows the world how beautiful we all are in the process.

The message that she sends with her artwork is one of acceptance and understanding. But while she does her own thing, she still holds true to many skills and rules that she learned while studying fashion in NYC.

As you can see and probably feel, her art today is free of restrictions, colorful, and very positive. She named the girl in her paintings Husa, which means housemaid in Swedish. Husa is a happy character that’s not too tall or thin, and who also enjoys nature and always looks happy in her simple existence.

Engström is a self-taught painter but her pure talent is something that can’t be hidden from the world. Check out some of her paintings below and see more of her art on her Instagram page!

Margaret Jeane is a digital designer and painter whose works show the most beautiful side of nature. She enjoys painting the shapes and pastel colors of things she sees around her, with her paintings including various landscapes, flowers, and animals created with skillful brushstrokes with naive touches.

There’s something peaceful about her art that makes us want to look at it for hours, and we have no doubt that you can see it as well. More than anything, it’s clear from her work that she’s passionate about what she does.

Jeane finds inspiration in the works of French painter André Derain, who was largely influenced by neo-impressionism and artists like Cézanne and Van Gogh. “Nature is my main source of inspiration; I’m very moved by the interplay of both color and form,” she told Impression Originale in an interview.

Check out some of her works below and find more on her Instagram page. If you’re interested in buying prints of her works, she sells them here.

When it comes to the bird population, the future looks dire. Scientists estimate that two-thirds of North American bird species are at risk of extinction due to climate change. One research shows that bird populations have plummeted in the past five decades, dropping by nearly three billion across North America—an overall decline of 29 percent from 1970.

The data is overwhelming and it’s hard to grasp what it is exactly we stand to lose. In such cases, a picture might indeed be worth a thousand words. Canadian artist Rose Tanner helps bridge to gap between research and empathy. Using traditional oil painting techniques, she captures the unique behavior of birds, be it flying or nesting.

These oil paintings also include endangered birds, as Tanner explains on her website: “Endangered birds are a gauge to the health of our environment. By protecting the endangered we reassess our environment and our actions to come up with solutions for the species survival. It leads to growth, education, community and improves the environment, wouldn’t you say these are all great reasons to protect the endangered?”

Recent paintings include a blue-winged Warbler, Magpies, and Piping Plovers. Tanner herself is an avid bird watcher, with her work oftentimes relying on her personal observations. “One time I traveled 12,000 kilometers for a species,” she told Artsy Shark. “With a long lens, I have witnessed extraordinary behavior that inspires me deeply,” she notes.

Documenting birds is one way of ensuring we understand better the cost of their extinction. Awareness is key. Still, at least by some measures, not all is lost. A recent study shows that global conservation action has reduced the effective extinction rate of birds by an astonishing 40%.

Laxmi Hussain’s paintings stand out for their simplicity and clever use of color. Using blue ink almost exclusively, Hussain’s work focuses on the female body, showcasing its diversity.

Her choice of both color and subject is very personal, and ties to Hussain’s relationship with her mother. “I started using it around the time my mum got sick, but without realizing why,” she reflected in an interview with Purpledragon. “Then a few days before the one-year anniversary of my mum’s death, my sister sent me a gorgeous picture of Mum. She’s wearing a blue top with the sea behind her.”

According to Hussain, this photo is one of her first memories of her mother. “I remember standing at the feet of the photographer looking up. I realize that the color is linked to my memory of her.”

But though Hussain’s paintings stem from her personal observations and tie back to her roots, her art also has a universal appeal to it, and to women in particular. Inspired by real women, she finds the creative process empowering for her as an artist as well as an individual. Other sources of inspiration come from her immediate environment: the patterns of home interiors, the natural shapes of the outdoors, and the geometrics of architecture.

Hussain’s creative spirit sparked early on. As a child in London, she would lose hours after school sketching on the counter in her dad’s corner shop. But it took her some time and meandering to return to her original passion. According to Hussain, it was only after the birth of her first child that she took a leap of faith.

“Becoming a mother made me fearless,” she admits. “You realize that if you have enough energy and strength to do something so big, that nothing else is overwhelming anymore.”

These days, her distinctive style attracts commissions for illustrations and artwork from a variety of commercial clients and individuals. Hussain also exhibits her more personal pieces at galleries and art events around London. Scroll down to see some recent highlights from her Instagram page.

Carolyn H. Edlund’s paintings celebrate the quiet, serene beauty that can be found in nature. Born in Rhode Island and currently based in New York State’s Hudson Valley, Edlund is a renowned artist both locally and internationally, with her works found in collections in Canada, England, Germany, France, Italy, and the United States.

Having studied painting with C. Gordon Harris, Nguyen Tri Minh, Franklin Alexander, and at the Woodstock Art Students League, Edlund’s paintings are created with a high level of technical skill and quality. Her eye for detail and draughtsmanship have also won her accolades over the years, and in October 2018 she was a recipient of the Dutchess County Executive Arts Award for Individual Artist.

“I choose to work in a style that creates an intimate experience for my viewers,” reflected Edlund in a piece published on Chisholm Gallery’s website. “The size emphasizes the importance of each brushstroke.”

Using traditional techniques and employing watercolors and oils, she creates landscapes with atmosphere and depth. These mediums also allow her to portray the ephemeral beauty of our world in a lasting manner.

While celebrating the beauty of the natural world, Edlund’s work also pays homage to the craft of painting itself. “I value the characteristics present in composition, varied textures, and the power of light and color,” she says. “I intend for the stillness of my scenes to bring to mind times long past, and the luminosity to suggest a slight enchantment.”

According to Edlund, many viewers treat the paintings as a form of escape, following their meandering paths as they seek adventure. And yet, some find the scenes familiar, reminding them perhaps of the backyard they grew up in or a road they took once.

People use the most random stuff to paint on, such as a human body, coins, paper bags, and much more. Nowadays, it is extremely hard to be innovative and use unique “canvases”. But artist Ruby Silvious found her calling in the unlikeliest of places—used teabags!

Five years ago, on January 3rd, 2015, she challenged herself and created a project titled 363 Days of Tea. This project involved her picking out tea leaves and doing what she’s best at: painting miniature images on the teabags.

Whimsical landscapes, portraits of animals, sunflowers, and teapots are just some of the beautiful creations you can find on her Instagram gallery and Etsy store. Almost all of her paintings are inspired by her international travels.

And since she has been painting on not-so-usual canvases, Silvious has been featured in media all around the world, like CNN TravelThe GuardianGood Morning America/ABC News, and so on.

It should also be noted that in addition to her art being incredible, she’s also helping the environment by re-using these teabags.

If you are interested in purchasing some of her masterpieces, check out her Instagram account or send her an e-mail.

If 2020 taught us anything it’s the fragility of our planet. Experts agree that the immediate crisis we are facing today has much to teach us about an even more existential threat—climate change. A first step in the right direction is accountability: understanding our role in the crisis and working towards a more sustainable future.

Australian artist Kate Shaw is here to spread awareness about what it is exactly that we stand to lose if we don’t take action. Her vivid landscape art, while highlighting the transcendent beauty of nature, points out the dangers of overpopulation and pollution in a world that is slowly dying.

“The paintings deal with the tensions and dichotomies in the depiction of the natural world and our relationship to it,” Shaw told The Art and the Curious. “I am concurrently exploring the sublime in nature whilst imbuing a sense of toxicity and artificiality in this depiction.”

Her work, made of paint pours and collage techniques might remind of natural processes. Using swirls of acrylic paint, ink, glitters and powders, she creates dramatic landscapes that are both familiar and unfamiliar. A world that is void of human presence, drawing attention to the sheer beauty of nature.

Shaw explains that she began landscape painting after visiting Central Australia: “A visit to Central Australia in 2004 really helped me coalesce ideas about the materiality of paint and how this could connect with the material world through landscape,” she told Lost At E Minor. “The sedimentary layers of rocks literally looked like the paint I was playing around with in my studio, and it started from there.”

Alexandra Carter admits that minimal art was never an option. Using alternative media and surfaces that emphasize visceral marks, her work is a blend of painting, drawing, print media, collage, and performance. More often than not, Carter’s choice of material is a statement in and of itself—calling attention to the process of making art and highlighting its messiness.

Born in 1985 in Boston, Massachusetts, and currently based in San Diego, California, her practice pushes the possibilities of painting, as she creates new textures, and plays with color and ink. Her paintings are usually made using layers of puddled pigment and collaged imagery. The paint tends to puddle and bead on its surface, allowing her to explore its liquid form.

The distinctive quality of her work is especially present in a painting series in which Carter uses cranberry juice instead of paint. The choice of cranberry isn’t accidental and refers to her family history, given that Carter comes from a family of cranberry farmers in New England. Exploiting the staining effect of the juice, she stains antique linens and pillowcases.

“Abstract and minimal work never seemed to be an option for me,” she told the Exeter Bulletin. “I needed more to hold onto … I think it’s necessary to investigate the stories we grew up with, and other stories that have been told throughout history, and how those have shaped us. That’s why imagery from mythology, folklore, and fairy tale has had such a presence in my work.”

While the finished product might not be for everyone, it’s originality is worth noting. Scroll down to see some of her more incredible pieces.
