We Want a Slice of This Colorful Sourdough Bread

Award-winning illustrator and animator Rachel Ryle recently decided to combine her art skills with her love for baking. The result is a series of colorful sourdough bread that you will definitely want a slice of. We know we do.

Ryle presented her first colorful sourdough bread creation in January, saying she wanted to experiment with hand-painted bread. “I’m so happy with how my first attempt turned out and thrilled to be inspired to bake & paint more!” she wrote in the caption.

The experiment not only went great, but it also attracted a flood of positive comments from her social media followers. This encouraged her to continue making hand-painted sourdough bread while working to refine the process.

Ryle also provided some insight into her painting process. She revealed that she tried out the plant-based painting, but some of the colorings ended up burning away during baking. For example, the beta carotene and beet juice she used remained visible after the bread was baked, but the spirulina and turmeric were not able to handle the head.

For the time being, Ryle intends to continue experimenting and hopes to find an “organic option for painting my bakes”. We hope she does that soon so we can enjoy more of her colorful sourdough bread.
