Amanda McCavour Creates Large-Scale Embroidery Installations

Toronto-based artist Amanda McCavour is creating large-scale embroidery installations that are able to stand on their own with the unity of their threads alone. And the way she does it is quite impressive.

McCavour uses a sewing machine to create embroidery artworks, usually flowers or objects, on dissolvable fabric. After the piece is finished, she submerges the fabric base in water and ends up with the threads that form the intended image. The results are quite impressive and they find themselves on a fine line between 2D and 3D.

According to McCavour, she is “interested in thread’s assumed vulnerability, its ability to unravel, and its strength when it is sewn together.”

McCavour, who has an MFA in Fibers and Material Studies at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, has been exhibiting her unique embroidery installation in galleries across North America and overseas. She also received several awards and recognitions for her works, including awards from The Canada Council for the Arts and The Embroiderers Guild of America.

At the moment, McCavor’s works can be seen in person at Quebec’s Centre d’art de La Sarre. If you can’t make it here, the artist also shares her works on her website and social media. Check out more of them below.
