Good News in 2022 Captured in Textile Illustrations

It can sometimes seem that there is a lot more bad news than good news in the world at any given moment. But that is only because people usually pay more attention to unfortunate events and let positive stories fly under the radar. In an attempt to change the latter, artist Martin Smatana started an interesting project called A Year of Good News in 2022.

With A Year of Good News, Smatana embarked on a journey that saw him trying to highlight some positive stories that took place last year. He would pick out one piece of good news from the newspapers every week and then turn it into a textile illustration using second-hand clothes.

The stories featured in this intriguing series included the return of women cyclists to the Tour de France, 11-year-old walking from Palermo, Italy, to England to visit his grandma, and a hiker being saved from freezing thanks to his dog.

“I have always loved positive stories: whether in books I’ve been reading since I was a little boy or films I’ve been making as a grown-up, but above all, in real life, always trying to live it as best as I can,” shares Smatana.

Smatana ended up making 52 illustrations for each week of 2022 and then compiled them into a book. The first edition of the book was sold out, although there is a U.S. release being planned for the future.
