Herb Williams Creates Sculptures Out of Thousands of Individual Crayons

Crayons are made for drawing, but it turns out that this doesn’t have to be their only use. Artist Herb Williams uses crayons as a material for sculptures, combining thousands of them into impressive original pieces. Williams draws inspiration from various sources while covering a number of diverse subjects. This includes works focused on nature and environmental issues, pop culture, and everyday scenes surrounding him.

This talented artist created his first crayon sculpture in 2002. After experimenting with other mediums and materials, he returned to crayons in 2005 and has since made them the focal point of his artistic endeavors. He has made more than 100 different crayon pieces so far, with many of them being exhibited in galleries all over the world, finding their place in museum collections, or being placed in public areas.

Each of his creations requires thousands and thousands of individual crayons and can take several months to complete. His largest project to date was Plunderland sculpture, on which he spent a quarter of a million crayons and a year-worth of work.

“The sculptures are childlike in their curious approach to the object as icon, but beguiling and satisfying to me in the use of pure color as form,” explains Williams on his official website.
