Jukhee Kwon Uses Discarded Books to Create Intriguing Book Sculptures

Jukhee Kwon sees potential in books even if they are abandoned, covered in dust, or disregarded by their owners. She saves them and turns them into intriguing book sculptures that make up most of her creative output in recent years.

Kwon, who hails from South Korea but is currently based in Italy, uses discarded books in various ways, but the result is always a great piece of art. Sometimes, the books are turned into familiar shapes like vases and flower-like constructions, and other times pages are “flowing” out of these books like cascading waterfalls to form abstract shapes.

So far, Kwon has presented several distinct series of book sculptures, each revolving around a different theme. For example, Red Presence focuses on the artist’s memories and her love for the color red. The fromthebooktothespace series, on the other hand, deals with construction and deconstruction.

Jukhee Kwon received her Master’s Degree in Book Arts at London’s Camberwell College of Arts. Her works have been exhibited across Europe in recent years while also finding their place in private and public collections.
