Magpie Becomes Best Friends With a Dog

Interspecies friendships might seem unlikely in the wild, but they are quite common in a domesticated environment. And they can be quite surprising as a friendship between Molly the magpie and Peggy the Staffordshire Bull Terrier shows.

Back in 2020, Juliette Wells found a young magpie in need of help at a local park. She decided to take it home and nurse it back to health with the intention of letting the bird free once it recovered. But the magpie quite liked it in her new home and didn’t want to leave. Part of that reason was that she developed a strong bond with the family’s dog Peggy.

Peggy and the rescue magpie, who was named Molly, proved inseparable. According to Wells, it was almost like they developed a mother-daughter relationship.

“They love to sun bake, play ball or generally just hang out in the backyard watching the world go by,” Wells shares.

In 2021, Peggy gave birth to five pups, and Molly welcomed them like a true sister. She got along well with all the dogs, but grew particularly fond of Peggy’s daughter Ruby. They are all now living as one big happy family, with Wells documenting their adventures on social media. The trio also has its own merch that includes T-shirts and calendars. How cool is that?
