Mayumi Fukuda is Using the Art of Origami to Craft Artisinal Paper Jewelry

Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, has been around for centuries, and one artist found a fun way to put it to some good use. Mayumi Fukuda specializes in handcrafting unique artisanal paper jewelry, made with nothing but folded paper.

Mayumi Fukuda hails from Japan, but she was originally born in São Paulo, Brazil, and currently resides in Leipzig, Germany. Life took her to many different places, and she actually discovered her love for origami jewelry while residing in Lisbon, Portugal.

Back in the day, Fukuda was working in cinema and television, after graduating in public relations, but her life turned upside down when she re-discovered her love for origami.

“Paper revealed itself as the main material and the artist explores in a unique direction its lightness and volume through different techniques… She manages to break with the tradition of the predominant use of metal in jewelry and faces paper as a truly precious material,” writes Fukuda on her Etsy page.

In addition to selling her jewelry on Etsy, she also filmed a course for Domestika where she shared the secrets of her craft, from teaching you the basics of the Modular origami technique to showing you how to apply a paper treatment that makes her jewelry water-resistant.
