Old Black-and-White Photos Get a Color Treatment in the Works of Sébastien De Oliveira

Old black-and-white photos allow us to see how the world looked like in the past. However, due to their lack of color, many details about the specific moment in time they were captured in are lost. Still, that doesn’t mean those details can’t be re-discovered.

Sébastien De Oliveira is a digital artist from Paris, France, who spent the past seven years colorizing old black-and-white photos. Using digital software, he gives these photographs a new life and makes them look much more realistic. As a matter of fact, they look like they were actually captured with a digital camera, but just 100 years ago.

According to De Oliveira, who previously worked as an illustrator and fashion retoucher, he started colorizing photos as a side project. However, the results were so exciting that he couldn’t stop doing it.

“I spend lots of time finding images that tell a story, “De Oliveria shared in a recent interview with Bored Panda. “I like to get into all the details that can be found in a photo and try to give my own interpretation.”

De Oliveira says he prefers photos from the 30s and 40s but works with material from different eras as well. He frequently shares his newest colorizations on Instagram, where he already has more than 36K followers. Check out more of his works below.
