]]>According to Holt, she always liked myths and folklore stories and used to read them a lot when she was young. She later started researching mythology further and ended up combining it with her passion for pottery.
โI have always had a passion for classical literature, Greek epics, and the surrealist current, which guides my research and personal interpretation of my subjects,โ Holt shares on her website. โEach piece is a one-off, illustrated with a drawing inspired by places, mythology, or childhood stories.โ
While Holt combines several techniques, her favorite one is sgraffito. Popularized in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, sgraffito includes covering an unfired ceramic body with glaze or color and then scraping it off in order to create contrasting images, patterns, or lettering. Besides making pots, vases, and other vessels, Holt applies her unique style to handmade ceramic tiles.
Holt frequently shares her newest creations on social media. Continue scrolling to check out more of them.

]]>Leyla Monteferrante aka Leyla Mo originally hails from Iran, but sheโs been based in The Hague, Netherlands for over a decade. She describes herself as a โlate-night ceramic artistโ because sheโs actually a health economist with a background in industrial engineering and has no technical artistic training.
Even though her academic career took her in a different direction, Leyla Mo has always been passionate about art. She tried many different ways to get creative while working as an engineer, and something finally clicked when she discovered ceramics.
โI started to try ceramics in 2019, and day after day I became more passionate about it. While I spend most of my time being a mom and a scientist, I cherish the moments I get โ mostly in the evenings โ to create ceramic pieces,โ she explained on her official website.
The color blue is the most common motif in her work, which is generally inspired by Dutch and Italian traditional pottery, Middle Eastern patterns, nature, and animals.

]]>Romanowska hails from Madison, Wisconsin, and it was clear she was destined to become a ceramic artist since her childhood. Being in her studio reminds her of the days she spent playing in the dirt, experiencing true freedom while transforming mud into food, birds, and castles.
She didnโt want to let go of this time and her ceramic art made it possible to turn her childhood hobby into a viable career. Her art significantly evolved over the years, and she eventually shifted focus to making quirky, colorful masks.
With their wild expression and a splash of vibrant colors on their faces, her masks look unlike anything weโve seen before, but she doesnโt think thereโs anything revolutionary in her choice to focus on them since theyโve been around since the dawn of time.
โMasks are present wherever humans are. I am only repeating an act that has been done since the beginning of us. Used for rituals and entertainment, masks can hide or reveal who we are,โ Romanowska told Colossal.

]]>Zackin doesnโt know how to use the wheel, but he has a lot of friends at New York Cityโs Gasworks ceramics studio who do. So, he simply pays them a visit and takes some of their pieces, reworks them, and gets to live his โscamโ another day.
Browsing through Zackinโs works, youโll discover that what he lacks in potterโs wheel skills, he makes up in creativity and humor. He adds funny faces and all sorts of snarky messages to the unwanted and half-finished ceramic pieces, turning them into art sculptures. His works might not get their functionality back that way, but they surely receive an attitude.
โI take all the bowls and things my friends at Gasworks NYC have discarded, and then I sculpt or paint on top of them. It is a good scam, and I love it,โ he explains on his website.
Zackin shares his works on social media, with many of them being available for purchase through his webshop. Check out more below.

]]>Youโll see Khannaโs Claymen, which come in all sorts of different colors, show excitement, surprise, or love. But whatever emotion they project, they tend to steer away from negativity and instead spread positivity.
โThe emotions evoked in us through our actions, reactions, and how we interact with one another has led me to understand how fragile we are, and I find that clay allows me to communicate that,โ Khanna shared during a recent chat with Colossal.
Khanna, who is a graphic designer and illustrator by trade, also explained that he came in contact with ceramics by accident. He was taking part in an art conference at Pictoplasma Academy and got an opportunity to create a small clay figurine during one workshop. He liked the experience so much that clay soon became the main medium for his artistic expression.
Khanna now runs a Claymen Studio that includes 15 assistants that help him bring his ideas to life and expand the world of Claymen. You can check out more of their creations if you continue scrolling.

]]>Kupferschmidt is a ceramic artist based in California, who became a true sensation thanks to his signature drippy ceramic pieces. Before developing his own unique personal style, he received MFA in ceramics and BFA in creative photography from California State University in Fullerton.
โAll of his work is formed by hand on the wheel, and while following a general series of themes, no two pieces are identical – nor surface exactly alike. He is interested in exploring unique approaches decorative and functional ceramics through design, color and glaze experimentation,โ he explains on his official website.
What does this uniqueness mean in Kupferschmidtโs case? He specializes in transforming clay into weirdly-shaped vessels, which look like theyโre covered with tiny drops or suspended in a liquid state. He uses a unique glazing process to make them come to life, singlehandedly covering their surface with drops and globs, thus making sure no two vessels are alike.

]]>Lanza has several series of ceramic art, but the ones we liked the most are ceramic vases with human faces on them. Handmade and done with great attention to detail, these vases are equally part impressive and disturbing.
You canโt help but to enjoy all the different facial expressions, including some quite silly ones, which adorn the vases. On the other hand, every time you look at them, they seem like they are looking back.
These unusual ceramic vessels are connected by the same theme, but each of them is unique in its own right. This is thanks to Lanzaโs unique style, which is โlinked to pop culture, symbolism, and surrealism, with a baroque scent, romantically connected to nature,โ according to the artist himself.

]]>This Los Angeles-based artist creates whimsical ceramic pieces that come with facial expressions. While the face features are minimalistic and include just mouth, nose, and sometimes eyes, each of her creations is unique in a way and looks like it has its own personality.
Kim, who studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts and UCLA, first got the idea for this intriguing project when she was working as a stop-motion animator. As part of the process, she was required to make small figurines and sculptures with different facial expressions. At one point, she decided to employ the techniques she learned in ceramic, and the idea of ceramic pieces with miniature faces was born.
Nowadays, Kim makes all sorts of mugs, bowls, and dishes in her characteristic style that are inspired by “organic shapes, nature, feelings, simplicity, and of course, people.”ย She also intends to combine this with her passion for animation in order to produce a series of short animated films with faced ceramic pieces as the main characters.
