The list of artists who found internet fame thanks to embroidery is pretty much endless and it’s not easy to make your mark on this oversaturated market. That didn’t stop Millie Amber from trying and her beaded embroidery is as stunning and whimsical as it gets.

Amber is an illustrator and textile artist based in London and her one-of-a-kind embroidery creations attracted 50,000 followers to her Instagram page so far. Her art is mostly inspired by nature, folk art, and mythology, revolving around poetic narratives and romantic symbolism.

“Her work is decorative, intricate and full of color, often focusing on the celebration of femininity and fantasy. She loves all things esoteric and ethereal, drawing inspiration from many places, but with a particular interest in nature, folk art and mythology,” explains Amber on her official website.

In addition to exploring the subjects that we don’t often get to see in other artists’ embroidery, Amber won us over with the unique techniques and materials she uses to bring her art to life. Instead of simply relying on needles and thread, she enjoys adding beads to the mix. They make her art even more dazzling and beautiful and give it a magical, dreamy quality.

Cats make everything better, and some people love them so much they would wear them on their sleeve—or inside their pocket. That’s exactly the idea behind Hiroko Kubota’s collared shirts, which feature tiny, embroidered cats peeking out of pockets.

According to Bored Panda, Kubota’s son inspired her to start making her signature shirts. Most store-bought clothes didn’t fit him due to his smaller build, so she started making him his own. At his request, she started embroidering the shirts with cats peeking out from the breast pocket—and the rest is history!

Kubota’s shirts became a huge hit on social media, attracting over 20,000 followers to her Instagram page. They also started selling them and easily found many interested buyers despite a pretty high price tag of $250-300.

Given the internet’s obsession with cats, it’s not a shocker to see Kubota’s creations go viral. The cats on her shirts will win you over with their unique personalities, and they perfectly capture the incredible diversity of this animal species.

Cat shirts put Kubota on the map, but her embroidery skills don’t stop there. She enjoys stitching together all sorts of different animals, from dogs and birds to frogs and geckos.

An old proverb says that “eyes are the window to the soul”, and Rana Balca seems to agree with this statement. The talented embroidery artist is exploring the allure of the human gaze through her beautiful creations by using eyes as the center subject in her work.

Rana Balca hails from Istanbul, Turkey and she graduated from the Department of Fashion and Textile Design at the Yeditepe University in 2016. Instead of turning to fashion design like most of her peers, she decided to explore her passion for textiles through a form of artistic expression that’s often considered old-fashioned in the modern world – embroidery.

Rana Balca is no stranger to stitching together pretty flowers, but her embroidery art wouldn’t have become such a huge hit if that was all she did. She made a name for herself by putting the eyes front and center, using needle and thread to meticulously capture every detail that hides behind our gaze.

Balca’s hoops invite you to imagine the feelings hiding behind the eyes, welcoming you into the realm where eyes become an enigmatic gateway to our inner life. It’s remarkable to see how much they can tell about us, and this talented artist truly mastered the craft of using them to embroider our most secret emotions.

The days when embroidery artists only needed a hoop and a thread to create something amazing are long behind us. Some of our favorites are turning this art form on its head by creating all sorts of amazing curiosities, and Ipikan is doing just that with her insect-shaped creations.

Based in Montpellier, France, this embroidery artist attracted over 60,000 followers to her Instagram page, and she deserves much more because her creations are unlike anything we’ve seen before. They’re inspired by different subjects, from nature to the human body, but insects seem to be her personal favorites.

On her Etsy page, Ipikan says she specializes in “a bit of fantasy, color, embroidered curiosities, some bestiaries, all made entirely by hand.” Unlike most embroidery artists, she doesn’t sell her hoops as artwork alone, trying to make them as practical as possible instead.

Many of her embroidery creations can be used as brooches, and they’re mostly shaped like butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and other insects. In addition to the thread, Ipikan uses all sorts of other materials to bring her creations to life, ranging from beads and pearls to cotton and wire. Her attention to detail will leave you in awe, so head to her Instagram page to discover more of her masterful creations.

Embroidery is amazing in its own right, but the real magic happens when our favorite artists find a way to make it practical. Erin Essiambre is one of them, and she’s using her embroidery skills to make miniature pendants inspired by the ’70s aesthetic.

Essiambre is the mastermind behind the embroidery brand Salt Water Stitches and the author of the book Retro Girl Embroidery. Her embroidery hoops come in different shapes and sizes, but she found her true calling once she discovered a way to transform them into something you can wear.

“I loved the pieces that I had been creating, but I wanted to turn it into wearable art somehow. I began to play with the idea of just taking my favorite aspects of each design and translating it to a pendant which is the way I still come up with new pendant designs to this day,” she told My Modern Met.

Since the very start of her creative journey, Essiambre turned to the ’70s for inspiration. She finally felt that she developed her unique style once she started toying with designs inspired by fashion and music from the ’70s.

This is how she developed her signature “retro girl” style, instantly recognizable by female figures outlined in black and white and surrounded by a splash of vibrant colors.

Pet portraits take many different shapes and forms, and if you still haven’t seen ones that have been stitched together—now’s the time! Amberry Lamb is crafting some of the most whimsical pet portraits that you’ll ever come across, showing animals wearing vintage human clothes.

Before starting to embroider custom-made portraits for other people, she kicked things off by making a portrait of her own cat Athena. The gray and fluffy feline reminded her of an old lady, and that’s why she decided to immortalize her with a portrait that shows her wearing a tiny hat and purple outfit, with a bunch of forget-me-nots stuck in between.

This portrait turned out to be a huge hit for Amberry Lamb, and many people asked her to turn their own pets into unique heroes in their own embroidery stories.

“Every pet is loved and unique. I do embroidery based on a photo of a pet and come up with a costume… Every pet owner can tell hundreds of interesting stories related to his pet. There is a lot of love and friendship in these stories. It’s very inspiring,” she writes on Behance.

In addition to creating pet portraits, Amberry Lamb enjoys expiring many other themes through her embroidery, often concerning nature. She’s also a skilled illustrator and painter, and her art will welcome you into the imaginary world of Amberry Forrest.

Penny Dowdell enjoyed making art for as long as she can remember, and things truly fell into place once she discovered embroidery. Instead of focusing on stitching together pretty flowers like most of her peers, she decided to capture the beauty of everyday life through her embroidery art.

Before discovering her love for embroidery, Dowdell explored other art forms in her youth, such as painting and drawing. She later studied fashion at the Arts University Bournemouth, and later decided to specialize in embroidery and small craftwork.

Dowdell hails from England, but she currently works in Taiwan, and she’s been exploring the magical world of embroidery for an entire decade. She describes her style as precise but imaginative, and claims she’s inspired by texture, color, travel, and interior design.

“I want my work to be fun, to celebrate life, to provoke smiles; but to also be realistic and not veer into nostalgia or idealism. There is no point in sewing cute phrases if the phrase is hollow or immature,” she explains on her official website.

Dowdell is best known for her interior design collection, and she made it possible for other people to recreate her art. PDF patterns of her most famous artworks are available on her website, and you can give them a shot if you’re an embroidery enthusiast.
