Penny Dowdell’s Embroidery Life Captures the Scenes from Everyday Life

Penny Dowdell enjoyed making art for as long as she can remember, and things truly fell into place once she discovered embroidery. Instead of focusing on stitching together pretty flowers like most of her peers, she decided to capture the beauty of everyday life through her embroidery art.

Before discovering her love for embroidery, Dowdell explored other art forms in her youth, such as painting and drawing. She later studied fashion at the Arts University Bournemouth, and later decided to specialize in embroidery and small craftwork.

Dowdell hails from England, but she currently works in Taiwan, and she’s been exploring the magical world of embroidery for an entire decade. She describes her style as precise but imaginative, and claims she’s inspired by texture, color, travel, and interior design.

“I want my work to be fun, to celebrate life, to provoke smiles; but to also be realistic and not veer into nostalgia or idealism. There is no point in sewing cute phrases if the phrase is hollow or immature,” she explains on her official website.

Dowdell is best known for her interior design collection, and she made it possible for other people to recreate her art. PDF patterns of her most famous artworks are available on her website, and you can give them a shot if you’re an embroidery enthusiast.
