Joao Charrua is a Portuguese origami artist who has a unique approach to his craft. He wants to add a new dimension to paper art by producing pieces that are unlike anything his audience has seen before.

While most paper artists prefer to take their inspiration from the animal world or pop culture, Charrua turns to the surreal. His paper sculptures are imaginative, daring, and thought-provoking. And most impressive of all, they are crafted from a single piece of paper.

Charrua’s creative process exemplifies his strive for unique, different, and unseen. The artist does extensive preparation to translate things from his imagination to paper via 3D sketches. These test paper sculptures allow him to visualize the features he wants to achieve and give his folding practice a more natural flow when he starts with the final piece.

“My paper sculptures are a journey through the places of my imagination,” the artist shares. “They are a physical translation of the ideas that inhabit my mind and come from the most different universes with the most diverse influences.”

Charrua frequently shares his new paper sculptures on Instagram, where he has almost 22K followers. Continue scrolling to check out more of his exceptional works.

Paper art is a truly fascinating art form, and Ann Wood is using it to transform sheets of paper into lifelike botanical wonders. The delicate petals come to life in the hands of this talented paper artist and you’ll have to do a double-take to realize they’re not real.

Ann Wood is part of a creative duo Woodlucker, which she founded with Dean Lucker after they graduated from Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1987.

Wood made a name for herself as a paper artist, and she specializes in creating “mixed media portraits and theatrical tableaus of mysterious beauty and solace whose identity is grounded in the timeless aesthetic and ethic of rural America,”, according to her official website.

Wood enjoys experimenting with “what paper can become” and her creations made quite a splash on social media, attracting 160,000 followers to her Instagram page. We’ve seen her create everything from paper feathers and mushrooms to insects and fruits over the years, but flowers are definitely her biggest specialty.

Each petal in her work is delicately formed and thoughtfully arranged. She’s so good at mimicking nature’s floral masterpieces that it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between her paper flowers and their real-life contra parts.

Margaret Scrinkl is a talented artist and stop-motion animator who creates colorful and detailed paper art. She draws inspiration from a number of sources, including pop culture, fantasy scenes, tasty food, and everyday objects.

It is safe to say that all of Scrinkl’s paper art is delightful. However, we were most drawn to her works inspired by popular movies and TV shows. This includes paper art dedicated to The Mandalorian, Stranger Things, Scream, Deadpool, and many others.

The fascinating thing about these types of paper artworks is the minimalistic approach that Scrinkl takes. She identifies the key theme and manages to capture it in such a charming way that you instantly want to watch the movie or TV show in question.

According to Scrinkl, she likes to watch a lot of movies and TV series while making paper art and can’t resist but to include them in her creative practice.

You are probably already familiar with the works of talented Indian papercut artist Parth Kothekar. We already presented some of his creations in the past, and you liked them very much. This is why we decided to follow up on that with a showcase of his newest series.

Kothekar’s previous works were focused on intricate details, complex patterns, and lace-like designs. This time, he decided to go one step further and use his paper-cutting skills to create a series of optical illusions.

Using just a knife and a single sheet of white paper, Kothekar manages to create impressive pieces that play tricks on viewers’ eyes. Carefully placed cuts and folds provide depth to the works, making his works look three-dimensional.

Paper art can take many different shapes and forms, and Inga Ilze Peterson decided to use it to pay homage to nature. She’s transforming paper into colorful flowers that look just as beautiful as the real thing.

Peterson is a paper artist and instructor based in Oregon, Portland, and it’s been over five years since she started sharing her creations online. Her paper flowers are so masterfully made and she pays so much attention to detail that you’ll have to look twice before realizing they’re not real.

Peterson has been in love with art since she was a kid, doing everything from painting and drawing to making doll clothes in her youth. She studied fine art and enjoyed painting floral still life but quickly realized she wanted to find a way to craft botanical art that lasts.

She embarked on a new creative journey when she discovered paper flowers, and she’s now on a quest to help other people discover their healing power through her workshops and tutorials.

“As you craft, as you cut and shape petals and fringe, it is an opportunity to just be present… It gives you the chance to realize that flowers, these beautiful things you are creating, don’t have to worry and fret about things… they just exist in the moment… and so can we,” she explained on her official website.

For Zai Divecha, using just one kind of material in one color is hardly an issue—it allows her to showcase the full range of her creativity and talent.

While engaged in multiple art disciplines, this talented San Francisco-based artist is best known for intricate sculptures crafted by using only white paper. To create her works, Divecha “folds, pleats, and rolls” sheets of white paper and creates complex patterns and captivating designs that feature clever use of light and shadow.

What makes Divecha’s paper sculptures really special is that the artist usually doesn’t know what she will end up with. She starts by taking a sheet of scrap or printer paper and then lets her imagination take over. When she gets the final shape, she proceeds to take the same steps using better-quality paper and recreates the piece on a larger scale.

Divecha presents her sculptures inside frames, making them a great display piece. So far, her works have been exhibited in art galleries across the U.S., including Heron Arts, Marrow Gallery, and the American Craft Council. Some of her works also ended up in private and public collections. If you are interested in seeing more of them, continue scrolling.

Paper quilling is a truly underrated art form, but many talented artists are trying to bring it into the modern world. Hae Kyoung Kim is one of them, and she’s using paper to celebrate the beauty of nature by crafting the most stunning flower-shaped paper sculptures.

Paper quilling is an art form that involves rolling, curling, or twisting paper to create amazing shapes, which are later glued together to create everything from greeting cards and jewelry to decorations. A wide range of tools is used to pinch the curled coils into shapes, from slotted tools and needle tools to tweezers.

Hae Kyoung Kim fell in love with this art form in 2007, and she’s been doing it for over 15 years with no signs of stopping. Since embarking on this adventure, she attracted over 40,000 followers to her Instagram page @rhodanthe1216, in addition to hosting several exhibitions in her home country of Korea and publishing her own book.

She mostly focuses on transforming paper into flowers and leaves, giving them a realistic vibe by using paper of the right color and texture. She’ll impress you with her incredible attention to detail, and her paper flowers are so carefully curled that you’ll have to look twice to realize they’re not real.
