Shina Novalinga is a 22-year-old Montreal-based TikTok star who has been embracing her culture. Together with her mom, she teaches her audience about the daily life of an Indigenous person, including throat singing.

She currently has 1.3 million followers and over 40 million likes on her TikTok account. In an interview for CTW News, Novalinga explained what throat singing is, and why is it so important to her.

“Throat singing is really important to me just because we almost lost that part of our culture. Is when you sing from your throats and from your hearts. It is between two women facing each other, and we imitate the sound of nature, the sound of animals,” she said.

She later added that they are currently working on their first throat singing album. “Through singing, we connect with our spirituality, with our voice, and with the vibration, we are creating.”

In her one-minute-long videos, the TikTok star also focuses on the subject of Indigenous women. During the Christmas holidays, they made gift bags for the Indigenous Women Shelter and the homeless in their hometown.
