Martha Butterworth’s Lip Makeup Looks are Tiny Works of Art

If you’re still not convinced that makeup is a genuine art form, Martha Butterworth is here to change your mind. Her lip makeup looks have to be seen to be believed, and they range from surrealistic 3D creations to miniature paintings that would give professional artists a run for their money.

Before becoming a makeup artist in 2016, Butterworth studied art and graphic design in college. She later become interested in fashion editorials and decided to explore this passion by studying theatrical special effects, media hair, and makeup.

“I love to draw and paint and love working with color and using 3D elements, especially from nature. I liked the idea of using the face and body as a canvas and seeing how makeup can be used in a positive way to express someone’s identity,” Butterworth told Vagus Magazine.

Butterworth enjoys creating futuristic makeup looks on eyelids, full faces, and even ears, but lips remain her area of expertise. We’ve seen her use everything from rhinestones, flowers, leaves, temporary tattoos, nail décor, and pearls to give them a distinctive look. Unlike most makeup artists these days, she’s not a huge fan of matte makeup and prefers lips with a glossy finish because the gloss brings out the colors and details in the final photos.
