Meg Lionel Murphy’s Paintings Show “Strong Giantesses”

As her Instagram bio says, artist Meg Lionel Murphy “paints giantesses,” strong women who’ve survived trauma in the past and rose above it, turning it into their greatest strength. Her subjects are now larger than the world, which can be seen in her symbolic artwork.

“Over the past few years, I’ve compulsively painted heartbroken womxn that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them. As the paintings grow in number, I grow just a little larger, stronger, and scarier too,” Murphy writes on her website.

The identity and the type of trauma of her subjects is a mystery, as she doesn’t think that’s the point of her art. Instead, she wants to show the process of rising above it and getting over whatever difficult thing happens in life, which is a lesson we all learn at some point. See her art below.
