Raffaele Salvoldi’s Impressive Wood Plank Towers Are Held Together Only By Gravity

Raffaele Salvoldi’s wood plank towers are impressive in their size and complexity but also look like they will fall apart at any moment. And still, they never do despite being held together only by gravity.

Salvoldi, who is a photography director by trade, began experimenting with using KAPLA wood planks as a building material for art installations. He ended up being impressed by the creative potential these planks offer, and his fascination prompted him to start the Wood Arc project, through which he started building complex structures.

The Italian artist envisions Wood Arc as an immersive project that will allow him to research “form, gravity, and architectural structures” while also introducing his wood plank creations to a larger audience.

As part of the project, Salvoldi creates his KAPLA structures in exhibition spaces, mansions, and abandoned buildings. The audience is invited to explore the space, watch the artist during his creative process, and admire the piece once it is finished. It can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months for Salvoldi to finish one piece.

Then, on the final day of the exhibition, the artist and the audience join forces to destroy the artwork. The event of destruction is open to everyone who wants to come to visit and is regularly shown on social media.

Of course, despite being destroyed, Salvoldi’s impressive wood plank towers get immortalized through photo and video material. You can check out some of his previous works below.
