Seo Young Deok Creates Astonishing Metal Sculptures Out of Chains

Seo Young Deok is a renowned South Korean sculptor who creates astonishing large-scale metal sculptures. His realistic works are exclusively crafted out of welded chains taken from bicycles and industrial machinery.

Seo Young Deok’s sculptures are almost exclusively inspired by the human form. They range from full-body constructions in various positions to detailed depictions of human faces.

Thanks to the shape and nature of the material he uses, Seo Young-Deok’s works look like a puzzle constructed out of countless small pieces. In some cases, these “puzzles” are fully constructed, and in others, the artist leaves them unfinished, hinting at the complexity of humans and their continuous effort to find missing pieces and build their personalities.

“We are interlocked and running like parts of a giant machine,” the artist shares on his website. “Just like its components, we hang in there day after day as a gray man living in the periphery. And we are not allowed to be a protagonist of our own very life.”

Seo Young Deok had his first solo exhibition at Seongnam Cube Art Museum in 2017. Since then, his works have been showcased in art galleries and museums across the world, including New York, Paris, and Istanbul. The artist also frequently shares his works on social media.
