Although we live in the 21st century, there are still some more modern-day views that are considered taboo. Yet, there are some artists that want to break those barriers and glass ceilings by using their art as a tool. Just like Akshara Ashok, an Indian artist who makes satirical and quirky comics about her daily life to show that, at the end of the day, we might be in different bodies, but we’re all human.

Ashok began her artistic journey in her early years. In 2017, she went to architecture school, which is when she started creating comics.

“My comics mostly talk about women’s issues, mental health, sexuality, and just everyday things. I believe that the purpose of my work is to convey a message rather than looking pretty, so I like to keep my style simple but cute. I add little details that normalize real bodies,” she said in a statement for Bored Panda.

Now she is a full-time freelance illustrator, and she is obsessed with her career—just like how we’re obsessed with her artwork. But it’s the fact that there are both ups and downs that truly inspire her. Those are the days where she takes her “pen and paper” and starts drawing. As the 24-year-old artist explained, her work has made her a better person.

“When I started out, I was known for keeping it real/raw. I think that still stands. I would describe my humor as sometimes subtle, sometimes in your face. I don’t like to censor anything in my work,” she added.

Keep scrolling and check out more of her cute comics below.

Isadora Yesha is an illustrator and graphic designer who dreams about owning a store and selling her brand of clothing, posters, and accessories, as well as having a residency space for BIPOC artists in her hometown Montreal, where her fellow creatives could experiment and exhibit their creations.

Growing up in a household where her parents shared the same passion for painting, it was not unexpected that she chose visual arts as her career.

“I’ve always wanted to make a living from my passion, to be able to create and have fun with art. However, I knew pretty quickly that the fate of visual artists can be difficult. So I started studying graphic design, so I could create in the hope of having more financial security than an artist,” she shared in an interview for Ballpit.

Her illustrations are inspired by many things: the playful forms, the whimsy of comics, and popular culture themes. With her artwork Yesha tries to “tackle topics ranging from kitsch, religion, esotericism, desire/sexuality and, inevitably, partying.”

She works with traditional mediums and starts the project with small sketches. Later, she vectorizes the drawings on Illustrator and finishes her work by coloring in Photoshop.

Check out the illustrations in the gallery below.

C.C.J. Ellis is a gifted artist known for illustrating mythical creatures of Wales. Based in North Wales, Ellis received a Master’s Degree in Design Communication and is the author of the book titled Welsh Monsters & Mythical Beasts.

She explains to Bored Panda that her book is an “illustrated compendium exploring the mythical creatures of Wales, comprised of ink and watercolors”. According to her, there are many “beasts” in the Welsh culture. However, many of them are being forgotten.

“I felt too sad to see that my culture is losing such an amazing array of creatures and legends that surround them,” the illustrator said in a statement for Bored Panda. “Therefore, I decided to bring them back to the forefront of Welsh culture and introduce them to a new generation by sharing our rich mythology with the world.”

The fantasy illustrator uses various media to create the creatures. She mainly draws them with pen, ink, and watercolor, but from time to time she likes to depict them digitally as well. That’s when she starts to use Photoshop and ProCreate.

Thanks to her amazing talent, the artworks have been published in online blogs and magazines. She was even invited to take part in a podcast and appeared on the BBC Wales Today show.

The cool thing about comics is that even if you don’t understand what’s being written, you can often pick up on what’s going on from the art within. This is especially relevant when it comes to French illustrator Franche Hirsute—at least for non-French speakers.

Franche creates brilliant comics that combine humor with real-world situations. Even though the artist’s comics are mainly in French, it’s actually pretty easy to understand what’s going on even if you don’t speak the language.

This is a major testament to Franche’s ingenuity. The fact that they’re able to convey their message clearly and coherently—regardless of whether or not each word makes sense—shows that the art speaks volumes in its own right.

After all, comic texts are really meant to highlight what’s already going on in the art itself. The emotion, the color, the drama, the energy—this is all being depicted in the actual illustrations, and that’s where Franche shines more than ever.

If you’re someone who loves comics, we highly recommend checking out Franche’s Instagram page, which happens to have nearly 24,000 followers. Like this artist’s followers, you may come to appreciate the wit, upbeat vibe that emanates from their work.

She studied Audiovisual Communication and Multimedia for two years at ERAM University in Girona, Spain, continuing her studies with the Open University in the UK, focusing on Art History and Music.

She was born in Barcelona and is currently based in Manchester, where she lives her dream. She does her artwork digitally because it “gives her the freedom to play around with infinite color combinations and brushes on a single device.”

“Visually, I’ve always been inspired by the painter Salvador Dalí. His art was very present when growing up because we both share the same hometown. I also get inspiration from the Pop art movement and from contemporary photography,” she said in an interview for Ballpit.

There are many controversial things going on in the world right now. The pandemic, climate change, and social problems are just some of them, and artist Eiko Ojala is raising awareness by illustrating these topics in his own unique way.

Ojala is famous for his minimalist style and has done many editorial and commercial projects before. This time, he had a task to create memorable illustrations about the most burning topics in the world and he didn’t disappoint.

You’ve probably seen his work before; his recognizable paper and shadow style brought him many fans. The artist lives and works in Estonia. As he told Colossal, he wants the viewer “to have a feeling that they would like to touch the illustration with their fingers.” His work grew and developed over time, and when you see his recent art it’s clear that he started introducing more layers and more complex topics.

As we mentioned, Ojala is always working on some editorial projects, but he also sets aside time for personal work. His recent Hugs series had a goal to raise money for the Estonian mental health support organization Peaasi. Check out his Instagram page to see more of his work and buy prints on Saatchi Art.

Celia Jacobs’ illustrations are the epitome of summer. Sticking to a warm color palette (reds, yellows, and orange that mash together perfectly), the Portland-born, Los Angeles-based creative describes her aesthetic as “pretty colorful, soft and a little hard, sweet, and a little weird.”

Her interests include nature, music, and social issues, all of which she illustrates with sensitivity and California technicolor. “I like everything to look purposeful, but like a hand made it purposefully, so it got a little messed up on the way,” she remarked once in an interview with Ballpitmag.

You can also expect to find a lot of patterns and texture in her work, with naturalistic themes popping out throughout. Her chosen themes tie in nicely with her creative process. Jacobs described as being one of those “dying breed of traditionalists”, whose illustrations include no digital touch-ups using a computer.

Rather, she sticks to more traditional mediums, using gouache, acrylic, and a heavy dose of colored pencils, which add to the textured look of the finished piece. According to Jacobs, she’s a drawer more than a painter, feeling most comfortable with a pencil at hand.

“Put most simply, I sketch out the drawing then color it in,” she describes her process. “I try to picture what a piece is going to look like beforehand so that the act of drawing is mostly brain-hand translation. I also like to do a lot of research and get myself into Google wormholes.”

Recent collaborations include The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. Her According to Jacobs, her job can take her to some rather unconventional settings, once working from an oceanographic research vessel and once from a lab in Bermuda. But mostly, Jacobs works from the home studio she shares with a black and white dog named Archie.

Take a look at some of her eye-popping illustrations in the gallery below and follow her for more.

How would you feel if your celebrity crush liked your photo or gave you a follow? Well, we assume it would make your heart pound. The same happened to illustrator and TikTok star Julia Gisella who got the chance to have a quick chat with Bella Poarch, a social media influencer and singer.

Poarch sent her a DM and asked Gisella if she could draw her as a French girl, which the artist accepted immediately. She took a blank paper and colored pencils and made a remarkable portrait. She captured the process on camera and posted it to her social media accounts.

But why is Gisella so popular, and why are celebrities commissioning her? Well, the answer is simple: because she’s super talented! She began doing art when she was about four years old. And since then, she has been teaching herself all kinds of art techniques.

Her fame began in April 2020 when she posted a drawing of a Coca-Cola can on TikTok. Later, she started sharing creative videos where she draws and mixes the faces of celebrities. She also drew a picture featuring herself and her boyfriend that you can see only with 3D glasses.

Scroll down and check out some of her creations below.

Andry ‘Shango’ Rajoelina is a gifted French illustrator, character, and color artist best-known for depicting famous characters and their metaphorical families. He explains that the “parents” of the family represent the oldest or the wisest characters, while the rest are turned into children.

However, according to his statement given for Bored Panda, the artist does not randomly choose the “family” he’ll illustrate next: “What I find interesting with this series is to find the right characters who could be represented as a family, find the right bond between them,” he said.

“I won’t stop finding new Super Families. I have plenty more of them in mind, I just need to find the time to work on them between work and taking care of my very own Super Family.”

The Ninjas Family, Pocket Family, Middle-Earth Family, Hyrule Family, and the Neighbour Family are just some of the characters Rajoelina has chosen to illustrate.

Outside of his Instagram account where he has 5,000 followers, the artist has an online shop where you can find his other creations as well.

If you’re interested in seeing them, go and check them out!
