Painting murals is hard enough, but French street artist Scaf decided to up the difficulty level by adding 3D effects to his works. His murals, which usually adorn the walls of abandoned buildings or give life to plain gray urban exteriors, feature an impressively realistic depiction of animals and other subjects looking like they are coming to life.

Scaf paints his murals to complement their surroundings while being easy to interact with. He often posts photos of himself alongside the work to give social media users some ideas when they encounter the murals in person.

There are plenty of recurring themes in Scaf’s works, with animals seeming to be his favorite subject. However, the artist always makes sure to add something new, even if he is painting a mural similar to some that he has done in the past.

“The hardest part is not repeating myself over time,” he shared in an interview with Bored Panda. “I always try to create something new. Sometimes animals come back in my paintings, but I’m usually trying to find something that best suits the wall. I need to paint without always doing the same; it’s quite difficult over time.”

Scaf frequently shares his newest murals on Instagram, where he has close to 160K followers. Check out more of his works below.

Tbilisi, Georgia, recently served as a meeting place for a large number of renowned local and international street artists and muralists. They gathered to take part in the Tbilisi Mural Festival, which is shaping up to be one of the most significant street festivals in this part of the world.

Started in 2019 by a group of enthusiastic street artists and art lovers, Tbilisi Mural Festival aims to transform Georgia’s capital into a huge public art space and decorate boring buildings with lively murals.

“Following years of unorganized and chaotic construction works, we aim to turn unattractive buildings into art objects,” say the organizers. “Furthermore, artists are encouraged to convey their messages and legacy through the power of art.”

The 2022 edition of Tbilisi Mural Fest hosted street artists like Fintan Magee, VESOD, Sasha Korban, David Machavariani, Luis Gomez de Teran, and Tina Chertova, among others. The group created murals in their own style on various locations in the city, turning Tbilisi into one huge open art studio across two weeks.

Thanks to the festival, there are now more than 40 murals proudly standing on Tbilisi’s buildings.

If you ever decide to explore some abandoned buildings in Barcelona, Spain, don’t be surprised to see some haunting graffiti decorating their decaying walls. What have you encountered are the works of talented local street artist David Lozano.

Lozano is a well-known name on Barcelona’s street art scene, having spent the previous 25 years painting graffiti and tagging the city’s walls. More recently, Lozano decided to take his artworks to unusual places, where they have a much more powerful effect, despite being more difficult to find.

Seeing numerous buildings in and around Barcelona left to be swallowed by time, Lozano decided to give them some purpose. He uses their walls to create his impressive murals that depict well-known characters in a state of frenzy.

For example, Super Mario from the popular video game of the same name is depicted as a mushroom-hooked madman, while Homer from The Simpsons looks like he has been possessed by an unnatural force. Seeing these works in normal surroundings would be creepy enough, but witnessing them in a place where everything is threatening to fall apart is even more daunting.

But don’t worry if you are not in the mood to pay a visit to some abandoned building in Barcelona to see Lozano’s work in person. You can check out his works on social media as well, or scroll below to see our favorites.

If the name Julien Malland doesn’t sound familiar to you, we don’t blame you. However, you might be familiar with his pseudonym Seth Globepainter, under which he creates intricate and thought-provoking murals all over the world.

The works of this street artist, who is based in Paris, France, are inspired by childhood innocence and represent a stark contrast to the chaotic urban environment they are set in. The subjects of the murals are depicted as playful and imaginative souls unaware of the problems in the world that surround them.

“The child becomes a spokesperson, a messenger of his investigations,” the artist’s official website explains. “He puts into play his image of innocence and places his character in difficult social, political, and geographical contexts.”

Malland has been an active participant in the Parisian street art scene since the ‘90s but recently decided to travel the world and bring his art to other parts of the globe. He has been traveling for years, meeting new cultures, exchanging ideas with other artists, and leaving his unique murals on the blank walls of cities like New York City (U.S.), Amman (Jordan), Natal (Brazil), Montreal (Canada), and many others.

You can check out Malland’s works on his social media accounts or by continuing to scroll.

Thiago Mazza is a talented Brazilian street artist who creates astonishing grand-scale murals inspired by nature. Most of his works include a detailed and vivid depiction of flora and fauna that envelops walls, facades, and sometimes entire buildings.

While his murals might indicate otherwise, Mazza is a self-taught painter. He started painting walls in 2010 after becoming interested in Brazilian graffiti culture. Soon enough, he developed his own style and established himself as a respected member of the country’s street art scene.

Mazza’s reputation also allowed him to create all over the world and participate in a number of art festivals. His works can be seen in countries like Croatia, Russia, Sweden, Mexico, and many others.

In a recent interview, Mazza revealed that his murals and street art style require a lot of preparation. This includes taking trips to the forest in search of inspiration. During those trips, he takes photographs of flora and fauna that he could recreate on a wall.

This process allows Mazza to always have fresh ideas while also resulting in the introduction of unknown and obscure plants to the wider public.

Art comes in a myriad of different ways. Some make music, some illustrate their vision on a blank white canvas in their home studio, and some—like Montreal-based artist Roadsworth—takes his passion out on the streets. In a cool way, making art in such a ruggedly public setting may be one of the best forms of art there is.

So if you happen to see a lively crosswalk decorated with quirky street art, chances are that you are indeed looking at the work of Roadsworth. But how did he get into it?

For years, Roadsworth has been transforming plain and boring crosswalks, sidewalks, and alleyways into intriguing artworks. His pieces are unimposing and mostly created with minimal interventions, but they manage to be effective all the same. This includes simple chicken footprints going across the road or grasshoppers resting on a lane.

Most of Roadsworth’s portfolio is inspired by current events, social issues, and environmental activism, and each work carries a certain commentary. In past decades, he collaborated with numerous organizations, including Greenpeace and Amnesty International, while also showcasing his art on numerous festivals across the world.

A year has passed since the first case of COVID-19 was noted, but the condition has not subsided yet, and it still has an effect on many people’s lives. It’s certainly affecting John D’oh, a talented artist who uses mixed media and recycled materials to create street art.

If you have ever visited Bristol, a town located in the UK, you may have come across his creations. Inspired by anything media-related, the artist seeks inspiration from a love of film, anime, comics, and the legends of urban art mixed with a little bit of “quirky John D’oh humor to it.”

In his latest creations, which he has shared with the world through his Instagram account, you can see images of wall art related to serious world problems, like the pandemic or global warming.

Disney princesses and other characters are often the main protagonists of his wall art. You can see Mushu tying a mask onto Mulan’s face or Snow White explaining to her little furry friends that they sadly lost their home during deforestation.

To see some of D’oh’s masterpieces, check out the gallery below. Do not forget to follow him on social media and support his way of covering these issues.

Street art often gets a bad rap due to reckless tagging and random writings that some people like to leave on walls and buildings. But there is much more to street art than that, and the works of French street artist Charles Leval are a perfect example.

Leval does the majority of his art on the streets of European cities, and the streets themselves often guide him in the creative process. Before he starts painting, he first checks out his surroundings, the placement of objects, and the architecture. This allows him to incorporate the piece into the city’s landscape and get amazing artwork in the process.

According to Leval himself, making art on the streets for the sake of making street art isn’t his goal. Instead, he aims to produce a “context-sensitive art” and have it serve as a “means of intervention.”

Leval has made more than 100 street art pieces so far and shares many of them on his official Instagram page. Check out our favorites below.

Okuda San Miguel’s unofficial goal with his artwork is to color the world in all the colors of the rainbow. Known for his distinctive style of colorful geometric patterns, the Spanish painter and sculptor has been inspired, and very much shaped, by the tradition of graffiti and street art.

With a massive following both online and offline, San Miguel has gained attention thanks to his colorful murals, which can be seen on buildings and objects across the world in countries like India, Japan, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Morocco, and Spain.

“I came from painting in the streets with spray-paint and to this day it’s what I feel most comfortable with, so murals were just a natural progression,” he explained in an interview with UDesign. “It’s a quick way to make a big difference to the space around you.”

According to San Miguel, through his work, he hopes to contribute to making incremental improvements to our society. The importance of his work is to change the world around him, from transforming the grey concrete into something full of life to adding color to people’s lives.

“Art must be present in public spaces constantly and my mission is to transform these spaces in a way that passing through them is an enjoyable experience,” he writes on his website. “I aim at converting the monochromatic concrete structures and buildings into vibrant places that are filled with color and positivity, helping and hoping to change the lives of people. I want people to stop looking at the pavement and start looking up and around.”

In the process of making an artwork for a public space, San Miguel considers the surroundings first. “I love to play with and integrate the architecture on which I work with my own creation,” he writes on his website.

Aside from graffiti, other sources of inspiration include music, fashion, cinema, and the city itself. The end result, often categorized as Pop Surrealism, is a well-shaken cocktail of all these elements.

Tracy Lee Stum is a well-known name in the world of street art. But unlike most street artists, she doesn’t use spray paint and instead uses chalk as her favorite tool.

While Stum engages in various types of street art, her most recognizable works are 3D drawings done with chalk. With her ability to add depth to a 2D drawing and great attention to detail, this talented artist regularly wows art lovers around the world and surprising random pedestrians who come across her pieces.

Stum started her street art journey in the ’90s when she became a part of the growing graffiti scene. Soon, however, she discovered her passion for 3D drawings and has been focused on this discipline ever since.

In recent years, Stum, who once owned a Guinness World Record for the Largest Chalk Painting by an individual, is traveling worldwide and presenting her artworks at festivals. She also holds workshops and does campaigns for brands.
