This Artist Re-Imagines Africa As The World Of The Future

Afrofuturism is a culture movement in books, films and art that connects Africa and African culture with technology and ideas about the far future. It’s a way to open our minds and think outside the box, imagining what sort of technologies we might have and how they’ll affect our culture.

Manzel Bowman, an art director from Ney York, uses Afrofuturism to set African cultures and histories in the far, far future. His art placed Africans from different cultures, in traditional clothing, on other plants, in spaceships, using insane futuristic technology and interacting with the universe.

The combination of old and new creates a hypnotizing vision of what our lives may look like in hundreds or thousands of years. Bowman’s work is also a great way to learn about Africa and how imaginative and diverse African cultures are. Now two characters are alike, and their clothing and gear tell their history, their place in society, their profession and so much more.

Afrofuturism keeps evolving and changing with time, so it’s hard to say what it may bring in the future. But one thing is for sure: it’ll continue to see the future in ways no one has done before.
