Two Rescue Dogs and One Tortoise Are Living Their Best Lives in Los Angeles

If you think that turtles and dogs can’t make the best of friends, one adorable trio from Los Angeles will prove you wrong. A tortoise named Rocket Larry is living his best life in sunny California alongside two adorable pups called Puka and Willie.

The trio’s owner Christine Hilberg was just settling into her new life in LA when she heard that a local man was trying to adopt his baby Sulcata tortoise. Desperate for companionship in a big, new city and intrigued by the idea of growing old together with her pet, she decided to adopt Rocket Larry.

Two years later, she welcomed another pet into her home. After a friend sent her a picture of a dog she spotted at a bus stop, Hilberg decided to become her dog mom. She named her Puka because her sandy markings reminded her of puka shells. Puka and Rocket Larry quickly developed a special bond and became an inseparable duo.

“Puka and Larry’s friendship is very special because even though they are two different species, they have a strong understanding of each other’s personalities. They really enjoy hanging out together and being in each other’s company,” Hilberg explained on their official website.

This duo became a trio in 2021 when Hilberg adopted another rescue dog named Willie. She’s an American Staffordshire Terrier/Bullmastiff mix, and she spent some time in physical therapy after being born with deformed front legs before Hilberg welcomed her into her home.
