Casey McCafferty Creates Intriguing Furniture Sculptures By Using a Direct Carving Technique

Most artists, especially sculptors, plan out their works in great detail before actually starting to work on them. But this isn’t something that is part of Casey McCafferty’s creative process. This New Jersey-based sculptor prefers a direct carving technique that ensures unique and one-of-a-kind pieces.

McCafferty works with a variety of different materials, including stone and metal, but his most prominent pieces are made out of wood. He carved wood into intriguing sculptures that can be used as decoration pieces and functional furniture.

According to McCafferty, he rarely relies on any sketches and has no defined plan once he starts working on a piece. He lets the inspiration of the moment take him wherever it wants, which ensures that even he doesn’t know when and how a certain piece will be finished.

“I usually think about stories I have read or the world around me and let it come out in wood, I rarely know what the finished form will look like till I am 75% through with the work,” he shared on his official website.

McCafferty frequently exhibits his pieces in art galleries while also sharing them on social media. Scroll down to see more of them.
