We all loved playing with dollhouses as kids, but the ones made by Joshua Smith probably don’t resemble the colorful toys that you grew up with. This miniature artist specializes in making models of urban decay, that perfectly capture the reality of the modern world.

Smith is based in Norwood, South Australia, and his career as an artist spans two decades. He initially found success as a self-taught stencil artist, showcasing his art around the world, and ran Espionage Gallery in Adelaide for some time before deciding to shift his focus and give miniature art a chance.

Smith’s fascination with miniatures and modelmaking started when he was still a kid, and he spent a lot of time making miniature things out of cardboard boxes. He later rediscovered it as a grown-up and enjoyed using his problem-solving skills to overcome the challenges that miniature art brings.

Smith now focuses on making miniature sculptures of urban decay, focusing on tiny details of the city streets when looking for inspiration.

“I often look at all the things that everyone overlooks like rust coming down a wall or where grime is forming. Things like gum on the sidewalk and discarded cigarette butts are the small things that can make a miniature street scene go from looking good to looking great,” he told The Daily Mini.
