Vintage Suitcases Carry Traveling Landscapes in the Works of Kathleen Vance

Add landscapes to the endless list of things you can pack in a suitcase. At least, that is what environmental artist Kathleen Vance manages to do as part of her intriguing series of artworks titled Traveling Landscapes.

Traveling Landscapes pieces see Vance recreating small-scale landscapes in vintage suitcases. All her pieces use real soil, grass, plants, and water, resulting in living and breathing sculptures.

“With my installations, I engage viewers with the experience of a space being overtaken by natural elements. I bring discarded particles from forestry floor together to be revivified in my constructions,” she explains.

The use of vintage suitcases as vessels for the landscapes plays an important role in Vance’s creative process. Before starting a particular piece, the artist researches the history of the suitcase, including its prior use, owners, and places it might have been before. Equipped with this knowledge, she tries to mold the landscapes to complement its story.

Fittingly, Traveling Landscapes have seen their fair share of travels, being exhibited in galleries and art shows across the world, including the United States, Germany, China, and France. But you don’t need to wait for them to come to your city as Vance gladly shares her newest works on social media. Check more of them below.
