Sally Blake’s Delicate Wire Sculptures Explore the Connection Between Nature and Humans

Sally Blake’s art went through many transformations over the years, but she’s always been focused on exploring the relationship between nature and humans through her work. The Australian artist used many different materials to convey her message, and she now focuses on transforming copper wire into nature-inspired structures.

Blake is a visual artist based in Canberra, who experimented with textiles, drawing, and sculpture over the years. Before becoming an artist, she actually worked as a pediatric nurse and midwife, and that’s part of the reason why her art often explores cycles of death, renewal, and regeneration.

Blake is especially interested in exploring the complex connection between the human and natural worlds, often using her art to bring attention to significant environmental and social issues.

“Visualization of the natural laws and patterning that hold people in relationship with Earth, as well as the consequences of these unraveling, is my focus. I feel deeply about disconnections in human understanding and care of the natural world,” Blake told Colossal.

Blake’s art went through many transformations, but she now mostly focuses on her signature copper wire works. She twists and turns the wire into intricately woven baskets and sculptures that echo the shapes of seed pods, plants, marine creatures, and other natural forms.
