Artist Illustrates His Relationship with Bipolar Father

Artist Timo Kuilder uses art as a form of therapy as he explores his relationship with his bipolar father through black-and-white illustrations. He collected them all in a book titled Until One Sunday We Didn’t. It tells a personal story of Kuilder’s childhood memories and his father who would “become a different person from one day to the next.”

As the artist says, having father who was “different” made him feel ashamed when he was young. He would try to hide what was happening at home from the world. He’d go through a lot of trouble to avoid having his friends run into his dad “who was probably already drunk,” as he tells It’s Nice That.

Kuilder has been working on his memories and emotions for the past two years. He recently turned them into a 120-page book that features his simple black-and-white illustrations combined with words he wrote together with friend Yasmin Dikkeboom. Writing the book helped him a lot with processing memories and starting difficult conversations with his parents.
